See this thread, sounds like the old oil seal displacement problem.
Check your gearbox level, I'll bet its overfilled cuz it's filling up with 2-stroke.

Dont forget to leave a good air gap when you fill the 2-stroke tank, it can easily happen again if you overfill then just push the cap on.

Theres nowhere for the oil to go as you push the cap on so the pressure simply pushes that seal out.

Sounds like the classic oil pump seal problem to me.
Seal can get displaced if the rubber bung has been pushed onto an overfilled tank, allowing the 2-stroke oil to enter the gearbox.
Do a search on oil pump I'm sure you'll find it.

What do you mean by 'not picking up at the top end' ? does it bog down, as in opening the throttle and not alot happens?
