At a half (badly) educated guess its the teeth on the cogs that engage on the kicksart shaft just behind the cover, they only need to be slighty rounded off to start slipping being as kickstart forces are quite high. My 500 had this problem at some point in its life and swapping the cogs for new one...

Just in case you're fix doesnt hold.. Ive used coils from a few different bikes on all the 2 strokes ive owned from ar125's to cr500's and they all woked fine whatever they were fitted to, as CRMR said, a 12v coil is a 12v coil
