I guess you could disconnect the plug (2 wires) just of the Reg/Rect and connect a battery in there. I think that would let you work on lights but if you are trying to fault find an ignition problem or warning lights then thats a bit more complicate as they are affected by the CDI (at least on an AR...

well a few more hefty 'taps' with a hammer did the trick - thank goodness! now just got to hook up the pv cables and start it!!!

thanks guys - I think it is more likely that the float needle is stuck - corrosion doesn't tend to be a prob in Uganda! I will give it a heftier 'tap' tommorrow. Just to add my two pennys worth - probably the best guide to knowing when a lock nut is worn out is when you can screw it on completely by hand (ie thread it on the spindle so that the threads pass all the way through). That is the guide we use in aircraft maintenance anyway, the other school of tho...
