Post by jamjaar » 29 Sep 2020, 23:39

anyone know any suitable swap out forks and shock to update the bike abit and deal with the constantly corroding outers on the forks.... ideally something that’s a direct fit

TIA

Wilbers do a shock that will fit the ar, but they told me only the more expensive one is suitable for off road use.

Hi Jamjaar

Having been in a similar position I thought I'd pass on the little I know

I managed to get a set of half decent forks from Rinkya for $200 (most of that was fees!!) during lock down with another $120 shipping (they have to travel by fedex due to the oil, same for tanks and wheels apparently), for my Mk3
You have to keep your eyes open for the bargains
I have seen an AR with CRF250RX forks fitted, you'll need to have the yolks machined although its close to the same size, they don't quite fit apparently.
My Mk1 has XR250 forks and I had the rear shock refurbed at K-tech last year for £100. They were very helpful dealing with my 30+ year old crap so would recommend if you want to stick with a stock shock.
Transformed the handling however it was pretty bad to start with and still a bit on the soggy side if I'm honest.

Let us all know how you get/got on so we learn from your experience :)

Cheers

Dave

Hi, does anyone know if a crf250r shock would fit onto MK2?

Why would you think it would? The weight of the bikes is approximately the same but the suspension travel is different and the use of the bike is different. Also there is quite a difference in the technology because of the age.

You might get it to fit but with regards to it being any use is very unlikely.

Hey,
I had same issue with mk3 AR forks corroding on the outers to the point of no repair. Parts in aus were expensive and hard to come by so i picked up a 06 crf450x took the front end off it , it has a little bit longer steering stem (10mm) and is 30mm diameter instead of the 26mm stock. Fork length from top to axle was 5mm longer (close enough for me). And offset to steering stem was the same.
Pressed both stems out, welded up the base of the stock and machined it back to 30mm to suit crf clamps and bushed the top clamp(0.8mm difference so took it out 8mm and dropped a 4 mm thick bush in the top clamp to bring it back to stock size. Im lucky i have the resources to do this at work but its an option if your finding yourself stuck like i was.
