Supermoto Storyboard

Post by simon foster » 27 May 2006, 13:49

I am going to fit a set of alloy wheels to my CRM, after looking around on the internet, mainly at Japanese sites I decided on a CBR250RRfront and rear.
I got a rear wheel, with disc and spacers+spindle for £50 and a front for £40 from a couple of local breakers yards, (I am after all a tight northern git!).
I have looked all over the web for directions on how to do this, but could not find any.
I have no formal enginering or mechanical background, Im a chef, but have been riding bikes for the best part of 20 years.
I am going to \"storyboard\" my experiences and please feel free to give advice as I am going to be using no more than common sense, as I explained before I am well out of my depth.
I will be asking questions that I hope someone with either mechanical or an engineering background on this forum will be able to help with...

Also if someone will explain how to post photos I will take some of the project............

First I measured the standard CRM Back wheel in situ, as far as I can gather the wheel is offset to the right by 14 mm.
Then I put the back wheel of the CBR in without the disc, the Back spindle is the same diameter(result!), I used the CBR spacers, it was miles out and offset 22mm to the right, so the wheel needs to come 8mm towards the left of the bike. I then tried the sprocket side spacer off the CRM this helped but was not perfect, the wheel still needs to be 2mm further to the left.
I was fortunate enough to find the a website that has technical drawings of the same front that is going in my bike, so I took the front wheel and drawings down to a local engineering firm, which is run by a mad old asian fella called Lad. He said the spacers and wheel will be ready by next Wednesday. when I pick them up I plan on giving him some drawings for the spacers for the back.

The conclusions I have come up with are

1.The back disc is the same diameter so the back brake should not be too much trouble, and can use the standard back brake off the CRM
2. I will need to grind off the support for the chainguard, it will foul the tyre when it is fitted
3.There is no speedo drive in the front wheel so I will need to fit a motorcycle computer and do something with the warning lights set up
4. This is probably going to be the longest post ever on this forum

Wish me luck

Simon

Go on Bargos get it done, got a set of 17 inch NSR 125 wheels if you are interested,

I am going to put a 110 section tyre on the front and a 140 on the rear, I think you can get a 120 up front and a 150 on the back but i cant see the point, it will turn slower with the bigger tyres, I would prefer something a bit more nimble.

Today I have mainly been measuring and Drawing what I need, It is looking like I am going to have to have the back wheel machined at an Engineers.

Firstly I had to calculate the distance between the outside faces of the Bearings in the rear wheel, The CRM measured 131 mm, the same measurement on the CBR is 137.

The spacers I am going to have done are, 15mm on the Sprocket side, and 19 on the Disk side, This will keep the wheel centred and also give me the correct alignment for the chain, however the disc will be 3mm too far too the right.

I have spoke to my next door neighbour, who is an engineer for BNFL. he says it is a straight forward task to shave off 3mm from the disc carrier which will bring the disc back in the centre of the caliper.

I am getting the dremmel out now to remove the alloy fixing bracket for the chain guard.

I got the part numbers from Japan for the bodywork I am going to fit on the bike so I can get this ordered next week......

All the best

Hi simon, First of all welcome and What a great idea for a storyboard. I think the most of us at some time would like to motard our crm's at some stage and then revert back to original when the weather turns or the lane s get greener?

Uploading photos .

If you go on the crm250.com main page (not the forum)
on the toolbar at the far right youll see a pic of a floppy
click this and click agree(once read.as you do)
now upload your photo(one at a time) and it will give you
a link
add this link in your next post and we'll see your photo

I hope your storyboard resembles a HAYNES type manual
like a photo and explination , Tools used, and so on

If i cant sell mine this summer , im gonna do the same..

Now I can Attach pictures, Here are a couple

Firstly the Left side of the bike, showing Chain alignment, with a 15mm spacer

http://193.116.26.75/uploaded/CRM_Motard_003.jpg

The right hand side is a little more tricky

http://193.116.26.75/uploaded/CRM_Motard_004.jpg

As you can see in the photo the disc mounts are way out of line with the middle of the caliper, I am going to measure exactly how much of the disc mounts will have to be removed to bring this back into line, but as I am working outside and its raining it will have to wait until later...

Measured up the back wheel, I am having 4mm taken off the disc carrier this will bring the disc back to the centre of the Caliper, I have also started to alter the bodywork.

I know styling is very much a personal taste, an everyone has thier own ideas of how a bike should look.

I am going to fit an XR400 Motard rear mudguard and the radiator scoops off the same model. These bikes are only available in Japan and should be here within 2 months.

I have modified the side panels on mine today, I will finish them tomorrow.

Took a couple of pictures

Been looking around for a Brake system for the CRM, Just got my first bit of \"bling\" for the bike

http://193.116.26.75/uploaded/_Mastercylinder.jpg

Its brand new from an MV Augusta, got it on E-Bay last night for a pittance  .

It should do the job nicely, just got to track down a suitable front caliper and Disc when I get the Wheels back, which will be tomorrow with a bit of luck.

Got both the wheels in, they are both aligned, done in 4 days and at a cost of £120.

I now need to accuratley measure exactly how much metal needs to be removed from the disc carrier.

See photos:

I had to remove the speedo drive locking bit from the right fork as it was fouling the CBR wheel

Getting there, but I feel the real work and head scraatching will start later in the project. :o

I have to get as much as I can done this week, this is my last holiday for a couple of months and I want to get it finished as soon as possible,

What brakes do you use on your Motard? I have no idea what to use.

I would prefer a set of 4 piston calipers off a road bike, I am going down o the breakers yard with my front wheel and the forks to try and suss it out tomorrow
