Newbie here, with pics of my new MK 1 CRM...with no spark!

Hi Everyone,

Just took a CRM as part of a deal for my old bike and despite the fact its a non runner I'm incredibly excited about this bike. I've been after a road legal 2 stroke for ages and had no idea what to get, so it looks like I might have stumbled accross the perfect bike..for very little money

Its a Mk 1 CRM with only 3 previous owners. The last owner enjoyed it immensely but didn't care for it judging by the way it arrived. Top bloke to be fair, just doesn't have the same interest in caring for his bikes that i do.

To start off with I gave it a good power washing to see what I was dealing with. After clearing half of a welsh forest from its various crevices, it seems the bike is in good, original, solid condition. I cant wait to get it running and looking tidier!

So the cut out problem:
He has tried a new plug and ht lead and then gave up.

After reading lots on this fantastic forum, I have bypassed the kill switch and am in the process of doing the stand switch though i'm not sure exactly what to do with the 3 wires as i was expecting 2! I will remove the switch completely, as keeping my bike running is far more important than the risk of me riding with the stand down at this stage so its going! I will leave the wring in place in case I want to make the bike original again, but for now i'll do without it.

So that's where i'm up to, I'm desperately hoping these steps will give me a spark, and will keep you all posted. Any further advice is appreciated.

If there are any local riders/owners around Cheshire (Middlewich) it would be great to hear from you.

I saw your article on removing the side stand switch but was unsure of one thing...
I am removing the block completely so will be left with 3 wires as you stated. I will join the green wire with the tracer and the green wire, this will leave the yellow wire with the blue tracer. Do i need to do anything with this or just leave it not connected to anything and insulate it?

Bypassing both switches i got a spark!...and then i didn't. So it is an intermittent fault from here onwards.

Let the faultfinding begin. Boo!

Will keep you all updated when/if I find the culprit.

After some late night fiddling it seems the bike will and wont spark depending on the position of the handlebars. Turned left, it seems to break a connection somewhere, straight forward turned right it sparks consistently, so i'll be pulling the font loom section apart over the weekend...fingers crossed were getting somewhere.

I might repost this in the technical section because i've heard these bikes are a bit of a bugger for electrical faults, so maybe my fault finding will help other owners?

I'm hoping to get a multimeter on it tonight to test the consistency along the ignition wires and the kill switch wires when the handlebars are turned, because these are the only 2 that would stop the bike running/ sparking aren't they?

could also be a split earth wire just simply touching metal and shorting the bike, another thing thats just came to mind is check underneath your ignition barrel and make sure the wires are firmly connected

Multimeter hasnt shown much joy. I was baffled at first at how the current kept dropping off which led to my discovery of the condenser- Funny piece of kit that is!
Bypassing that, there doesn't seem to be much going on. No loose wire faults I can expose.
I'm wondering if the regulator/rectifier might be the problem? Though it doesn't seem like it could do much, just looks like a cooling element located in a place it gets coated with mud and water! I'm tempted to throw 75 quid at it to see if that relieves the headache? The missus is getting a bit tired of me sneaking into the garage as soon as the baby is asleep! :s
Does anyone know if people make new looms for these or a place that sells replacement wire and connectors so you can make your own?

Also just forgot to ask, are you by any chance related to Fishy our friend in Hong Kong by any chance. He has had more problems than anybody we know, and he started with a running bike.

just have a quick look at the state of the wires coming from your pgm going under the sub frame as mine had started to rub away the cable. may not be that but its worth a look
