Oh go on then - Admins rides

Post by admin » 21 Jul 2008, 09:50

Been riding since 16 and passed my test back in the mid 80's so as you may guess am stuck in a bit of a time warp when it comes to bikes.
Never really had a phase away from bikes, maybe between 22 - 24 i had 2 years when jetski's took all my money and my old LC350 was ridden very rarely.
History, well started with an old Honda MT5 remember them ? utter crap, sold it and bought a Honda MB5 which was quicker.
Sold that and bought a Kawasaki AR80 with a allspeed pipe and autisa 93 kit and head. Fast as you like that but kept blowing up, and where i cut my teeth on rebuilds and bodging.
Upgraded to a DT125LC Mk2 on a B reg, passed my test and went out and bought my first W plate RD350LC 4L0
Couple of years got fed up with crap brakes and dodgy handling and bought a ex demo TZR250 on a G plate from colwyn bay motorcycles. Loads of fun on that, bought and sold numerous RD350LC's and powervalves, then bought a ZZR400 import in 1994.
Kept it a while and sold it, then after more time on LC's and a few DT175MX's i bought my first NC30 in 1997
Wow what a bike, and from that moment on was hooked on the honda V4. It was part of a biking dream to get something as close to my heart as the bigger brother the RC30 which holds so many fond memories for me in the early 90's as one of my best mates at school (ian dugdale from dugdale motors in alvanley in cheshire) raced RC30 with some success in the late 80's and early 90's before he died in the mid 90's
Anyway always kept the little NC, and had numerous more 250 stroker inc a few TZR250 3XV's the V twins, a MC21 NSR250, and recently a ultra ultra rare VJ23 RGV250SP which is not to be confused with the normal RGV. Also had a few other bikes, some worthy of a mention some not. a KMX200, a couple of CRM250's and a little KSR80 gag.

Currently i have the following, and i will dedicate a post to each bike.

1990 Honda VFR750R or the RC30 to those how know it.

Yes i am very lucky to own one of these, like i say its been a life long dream and its doesnt fall short either.
Its a 1990 full power euro bike on a G plate. Its always been a road bike and i certainly use it too unlike many owners. A very rare sight on the roads today and easily mistaken for its little brother the NC30 (400cc - see below) and often gives a few superbike riders a bit of a shock and wake up call.

Next up is the little brother the NC30. mine is a rare UK spec bike on a K plate. original and mint. Dont have any pics but its the same as my old japanese one shown below. The UK bikes are a bit different to the jap ones, spec is different yet they look the same. oil cooler as standard also a MPH speedo and no restrictions.

Now my favorite bike to ride its an old 1995 early Ducati 916. Started life as a strada, changed a few bits and now runs BP spec, fitted with later forks which are maxton reworked and a rear ohlins from a 748R. motor is standard apart from 50mm system with ultimap dual map chip
Sure its had its moments over the last 6 years, failed rectifires, clutch slaves, burst rads and oil coolers but nothing major or expensive to fix. It does cost a bit to maintain but rewards riding if you put a bit of effort into it. the best riders bike by far while in reality not actually that fast.
Shown below in its flattering pic of "i just burst my rad and you aint going any further into wales" pose. I think the yellow sets it off nicely though

Ok next up is my 1989 RD125LC mk3 this is a full power bike with working servo motor and showing an orignal 6000 miles from new. a very rare unrestored and original bike. Dont see these on the roads any more do you ?
Now in need i think of a rebuild after all these years of being sat the crank seals i think are starting to fail, and best replace the mains and seals before it self destructs. just such a shame to split the motor and open it up from new.

Now for the YSR80 gag bike, not much to say about this, bought as a rusted wreck, rebuild and restored using lots of new old stock, ridden a couple of times, found a new fuel tank, fitted and never dared to fill it with fuel again. now sits in my living room drained. looks funky though, rubbish to ride in reality.

lastly also bought a new CBR600RR in april 06 in the lovely candy pheonix blue. no pics of it, i use it to tour on abroad, its reliable and thats about it. At the ring it excells and is quick and handles, however on the road is utter crap, souless, bland and dull to ride with no midrange. makes a very poor road bike with dire fuel economy as standard.
Avoid. . .

Also seem to have inherited one of my dads restorations, its a 1968 Ducati 350 desmo. a rare bike and restored to orginal. Not sure whats going to happen with this as space is tight and i fancy building another road based NC30 for some fun and keep the UK one off the road.

Cant see me selling it. fell back in love with it again after riding it the other week. new exhaust cured the smoke (so it was years of unburned oil and carbon in the pipe) and it goes well now thanks to a gibson pipe.
Done around 40 miles on it the other week, great fun, got a 90mph out of it too - wow :D
just out of tax and test so next year it will be dug out again and enjoyed once more.
yours looks like one of the german ones with the aftermarket (genuine) full fairings. did you get that from michael (rd125lc.co.uk)

Oh man! that RD125LC takes me back, I did my part one on mine a C reg. I knocked the baffles out with a bar, it would do 95mph but used to get a speed wobble at 90, you just had to hold on in there till abt 92 & then it was fine for those last few mph. I even took mine off road going through the woods, not a problem!!! ;) Ally

so you like that ? get one, there are a few good ones left and when they are gone, they are gone. never had the numbers like 250/350 lc's one like this can be had for around 1500 quid. and they are sure to rise in value and fast.
thing is they are cheap to run and use and still really useable even with my 15 stone bulk.
