Engine case help

Post by Lukep749 » 04 Feb 2015, 18:30

Hi

Can anybody help, I have purchased a used engine case, I have tried to fit it today but it won't home on the crank end.
Taking a look at it it is slightly different to the one that was damaged, were the bolt that holds the cogs onto the crank the new case has a small like pin were the old one has like a circular casting. I can grind the pin off then it should home but if I do this and something else doesn't line up then I have to keep the case, I think the case is off a MK 1 or 2 and mine is MK 3.

The case was purchased as a MD 24 case and my engine is a MD 24 why are they different ?, I thought all engine parts except gears were interchangeable .

Help !

The top photo is from a Mk1 or 2. The other is from a Mk3. The difference is due to the Mk3 having a bolt on the end of the crank which makes is slightly wider than the not fixing that is used on the Mk1/2.

What are you trying to do?

Use the MK 2 case to fit the MK 3 engine, the MK 3 case is damaged (oil pump housing broken), is the only difference clearance for the nut, if so can I grind clearance to make it work.

Alternatively is there anybody who would like to swap a MK 2 case for a MK 3 case ?

Spoke to Leisure Trail on this one. You can fit MK 1 & 2 cases to MK 3 by gently removing the pin in the centre of the case with a Dremmal or similar tool, then taking 1 to 2mm off the bolt that hold the cogs onto the crank shaft, then Gentley taking the edge off the bolt.

If you do the above steadily and try the case 30 or more times with fine adjustment each time, it works, done it ! Be carful not to take too much off the case.
