Intermittent Powervalve Prob 99AR - Have read FAQ

Post by warnzie » 23 Apr 2010, 10:22

Hi everyone, i have read the FAQ on this but im still a little lost. Anyway here is a break down of whats been happening - (only 3 times in the last 2mths)

Pretty much i will ride the bike, all will be fine. Turn it off, have a coffee. Start it up, go down the road and the powervale won't engage - ie - it wont rev out. Now this is the main part where im sure one of you guys will know exactly what the problem is. All i have to do is turn the bike off, wait 5secs, start it up again and bob's your uncle, its all fine?

After reading the FAQ it doesn't seem like its the CDI - thank goodness, but maybe more the servo motor - anyone help?

Nathan

Those are the exact same symptoms putting a duff ECU had on my AR. It works fine most of the time but then occasionally the powervalve won't open or won't shut. Work through the info in that post SkidMark referred to and hopefully it isn't the ECU - but just because it's very occasionally, you can't discount the idea entirely.

Mate - I am afraid that most likely it is your ECU. You have exactly the same symptoms that mine had.

Through my experience of fault finding mine and reading about other people experiences I believe that both the reg/rect going bad or a fault with the Power Valve Servo unit can lead to the ECU dying. It is hard to explain why exactly but for sure you should fix it sooner rather than later. My opinion is that you have early symptoms and by replacing either the reg/rect or the Power valve Servo Unit you may save your ECU. However before you rush out and spend loads of money follow though Scrub's trouble shooting guide and then post what you find here.

I havn't done the test yet, tomorrow, but in my mind, as its intermittant, it has to be electrical - ie, either the servo motor is becoming catus or the regulator is becoming catus! If was the plastic teeth in the servo it wouldnt work at all and thats the annoying thing, it works fine 90% of the time...maybe a loose connection?

To be honest, it would be a lot easier if the power valve wasnt working at all - then very easy to diagnose

Well, i have solved the problem! After opening the servo motor it looks like the grease in there has become caked up the wires were most likely getting caught and dragging. So i cleaned them up, re-greased the cables and wd-40 the mechanism and motor and walah, no problems and went for 200km ride stopping and starting frequently for a rest and no probs!
