Blast n paint

Post by hetasfireplacefitter » 05 Jan 2020, 23:23

I know very little about shot/sand/bead blasting and powder coating. I have the md24 mk2 with the 2 stroke in the frame.

Now my question is do I block up all the holes to the frame for blasting and flush it all out after or do I blank them all off with something harder than it’s being blasted with? An orangina bottle cap fits the filling hole very nicely but I imagine it would get blasted to pieces?

How do you pro’s do it?

I would ask the company who is doing the powder coating for you. Some companies (ie the more expensive motorcycle specialists) will do all this for you. The cheaper (more general purpose companies) don't really care so its up to you to sort it. Powder coating is very hard so if it gets into threads/headstocks etc then its a real pain to shift it afterwards. Threads are easily covered by old bolts. If you only have one area of concern eg a 2T tank then talk to them or leave a note attached to the frame.

The CRM frame number on my AR was not deep into the metal so I asked them to mask before painting. Its an MOT fail if the number is not visible.

Both the Powdercoating firms I used blocked all the holes up for me.

Blocking them all up is the way to go after talking to most people. Good bit of advice about the frame number being protected before blasting, thanks Keith for that. The legend they call TOM from leisure trail had the same to say about it all. Block all reservoir holes, use old bolts in threads and protect the frame number.
