II had a similar problem but I think I've fixed it.

Firstly I cleaned the housing really well, and made sure there was no muck/plastic left, I then inserted the two thrust washers that go in to the housing before the gear (sometimes left off) and a bit of light grease, all runs really smooth and (for now) seems OK.

It can be caused by muck in the drive and a stiff/twisted/worn cable.

Well.....I thought the problem was sorted, but last week, after approx 1000-2000 miles the speedo has stopped again, so took it off and found that the nylon gear was worn out (again), so, I have concluded that the worm drive is f*&^%ked.

Does anyone know if you can get the worm drive out and if so, whether that part can be purchased, or is it as I suspect, a new speedo drive from Lings/Silver at 82 squid ....ouch
