MK2 swingarm outer dust seals - Honda specific?

Post by Hallsy » 12 Sep 2011, 14:20

Does anyone know if the outer dust seals on the swingarm (52144-KR8-003 or 005) are specially made for Honda or a run of the mill dust seal/cap?

Does anyone have a non Honda part number for them? I don't have any to measure or take details from :(

I haven't called them yet!!

I was more interested in size & design, I have a small crack on outer lip of bearing housing on the swingarm, possibly caused by previous owner having trouble getting spindle out.

Wasn't sure about repairing/welding it, but a workmate suggested pressing a steel sleeve over the shoulder (where presumably the dust seal would go) to stop the crack from being able to open up. Trouble is, without knowing how the dust seal fits (remember, bike bought in bits and parts diagrams aren't that well drawn!!) I'm not sure how well it will work, or what type of dust seal I would need to use, to keep the bearings protected.

Even a close up photo of this area would help no end :)

I know XR400 ones fit and I think there must be others as well.

Is it just the peice where the seal goes over that is cracked :?: . If it is, then a nicely placed weld and judicious use of a file should see you right. Or even some epoxy metal :?: .

NkdMk1 - yeah, the lip that sticks out the end of the housing where the seal would fit over. The guy that stripped teh bike had left a part broken shell in there, so suspect he had some trouble getting it out. I pressed it out yesterday OK, although it was fairly tight.

The crack is very small and looks like it's been there a while, welding is an option, I thought about getting one of the welders at work to tig the crack on the inside, then ream the housing out again, and also continue with the steel sleeve around the outside to be belt & braces. My only concern with welding ally is if the swingarm was originally heat treated then welding can normalise the area. We have heat treating furnaces at work, but the guys only really know about heat treating steel so wouldn't want to go down that route really. That's if the swingarm is heat treated, maybe it's not :?:

I'll get some pictures added to my project thread, I'm just in a bit of a muddle at the mo with some parts at work and some parts at home, trying to get little bits done here & there!

I would have said, and have used the same logic, that as long as the inner bore, and the outer diameter are the same as original, the depth of the seal, [within reason] is academic IMO.
Try here for a value options.

Mike - that's part of the problem, I don't know original dims as I don't have any

Plus, the length will be a factor as the seals sits on the shoulder of the swingarm, which then has to fit between the inside faces of the frame mounting points.

I assume the outer seals take up a little bit of side to side movement when the swingarm is between the frame.

I'm doubting they're lip seals anyway as they would be internal, but these look like a dust seal that fits over the top of the lip. I'll just order some from Honda and see how they'll work with the repair.

Found a pic of an XR400 one, looks like a rubber dust cap with a metal washer on outside face.

I'll order one from LT and make something suitable for the repaired side :)

Yep, they're the ones Nkd. I'll buy one from LT for the good side and for the cracked side i'll make a solid version to press over the crack.

Should stop it opening up then.

Glad I was sitting down when I got the quote back from LT:

90161-759-000 Swingarm bolt £24.82
90305-GE8-003 Nut £4.52
52144-KR8-005 Dust seal £7.95 EACH

David Silver can do the bolt for ~£14 although it'll be a 7 day wait. The nut & seals were a good bit cheaper also, even Lings sell the swingarm bolt for £17.

LT may be convenient as they have them in stock, but that's a serious mark up!!

Anyone got a spare swingarm bolt kicking around before I order a new one?
