What are they worth

Post by longmoreuk » 18 Nov 2013, 20:26

Well I have looked around and seen some very expensive poo, how much are each respective mk worth these days and what do people think about the future for them. It seems to be a right pain the backside to source loads of bits for the bikes these days so keeping them sound will get harder and harder.

I don't get to ride my bike as much as I would like but I am also getting a bit too concerned with taking it off road in case I smash it up! Not really the purpose of the bike was it to sit in a garage.

In terms of looking after long term:

The AR is going to be a real problem if you use it as intended. Though it is the nicest to look at and mechanically advanced, general up keep is going to get worse. Mk3 is pretty much in the same boat apart from the AR system and electronics. (To give you some kind of illustration about how bad the ARs electronics are - There was one issue of ECUs for Mk1s (the original when made), and Two for the Mk2 and Mk3 (the original and one revision for the two most popular models). There have been four issues of ECUs for the AR!

The Mk2 has poor electronics but you can get new plastics as some are the same for CRs. MK1 is the one to have in this respect as the most reliable and some plastics are still made under the CR banner. Almost all engine and serviceable parts are exchangeable across the Mk1-3 and even the AR so with a bit of thought most things are doable.

In terms of cost to buy:

Some of the prices on eBay and the like are way too high. I've seen virtually the same bike priced at anything between £850 and £2,200. The high prices are aimed at collectors but they must be mint and original to get those prices and most are nothing like that. A decent MOT pass for a Mk1-3 must be worth £850 upwards but probably not more than £1,300 unless it is 'special' in some way. ARs in the same condition might be £1,200 going up to £1,700 ish.

But at the end of the day bikes are worth what people will pay for them and there seem to be some around that want the kudos of an AR, but don't realise the hassle and cost if they use it, may pay £2k? Beyond that we are talking about a very small number of collectors, 'specially interested', and the very well moneyed.

My opinion only of course ...........

Thanks for the info knackered. Quite interesting re the differences between the models. The at will always be a premium as it was the last and was fairly forward thinking and prob the way 2 strokes would have gone had they not vanished due to emissions regs etc.

Twisted - I have a mk3- you are welcome to it at that type of money!

I ask really as I have a few older bikes now. I have an nc23 and an nc30, together with the Crm. I am fairly up with the 23 and 30 but a bit behind n terms of the market etc for the Crm. It's good to have up to date info as I the Crm is the only one of my bikes I get concerned about due to the limited market for good spares.
