2 stroke oil - viewing tube + oil light+ overrun
2 stroke oil - viewing tube + oil light+ overrun
Hi there, just picked up a 1992 CRM250 MKr2 with just 15.5k on the clock.
I love it! I have owned MZ's in the past but this is in a different league of 2 stroke madness.
1. I filled her up with petrol and then filled up the 2 stroke oil in frame. At this point I noticed the viewing tube was filled up to the top. After 60km the tube is now just 1/3 full. Is this correct? The FAQ indicates the viewing tube seems to deplete quickly but much oil is left in the frame. Can anyone confirm that's the case?
2. How low does the 2 stroke oil need to be before the oil light will come on? How much will I have left when it does?
3. When fully filled up with 2 stroke oil, how far will that get the bike?
4. Let's say I'm going downhill and the bike is popping away on the overrun. Is it still being lubed even though I'm off the throttle?
Any insights will be gratefully received!
Thank you.

Re: 2 stroke oil - viewing tube + oil light+ overrun
Hi, I would get a small resealable bottle and fill it with your brand of two T, and carry that round with you in your back back.
The vision tube is more to show when the 2T tank is nearing full when filling. In practice it overflows then the tube fills up.
There's a litre of oil, so mixed at approx 50/1 you should get 50 ltrs of fuel to that oil, so say 4/5 petrol tank fillings.
I would fill oil the tank, then monitor the amount of fuel your adding, you should get the oil light on before the oil tank empties, at which point you can add the oil your carrying around for this purpose.
Some people fit clear tube from the pump too the inlet manifold, this aids easy visual checking.
There will still be some oil residue in the system for closed throttle situations.
Personally, after extended constant throttle high speed cruising, I pull the choke out before closing the throttle.

Re: 2 stroke oil - viewing tube + oil light+ overrun
oil lights can fail keep it topped up at all times the pipe works out to around a gallon of fuel when im in wales i always keep a eye on it once its clear its topped up....half a tank to go, i have a cr tank on mine so ive had to get used to having no reserve also i have no oil sensor as that was removed and capped do to weight reduction
as long as the engine is running it will pull the oil through as the pump is connected to the internal drive i run clear pipes all round on mine plus they look better than standard

Re: 2 stroke oil - viewing tube + oil light+ overrun
I do a three day trail ride covering around 130-150 miles a day, my low oil warning light usually comes on part way through the last day, but still enough left to get me home.
