How bad is this bad?

Post by 2stroke » 23 Dec 2014, 19:34

Hello all! As you probably remember, I've bought a bike few weeks ago, but haven't ridden it yet. It was overheating, knocking bearing and I was slowly fixing and servicing things and was getting to know my first 2 stroke.

As someone had suggested, today I have removed my exhaust to have a peek through exhaust port. And what i saw- I think, it doesn't look good. Question is, how bad it is? Is it full rebuild? Do I need only a piston or rebore aswell? Can I ride it like that maybe? What caused it if any ideas? Any info appreciated. Cheers

Basically I feel I am in a deep end... :)

P.S. Also rims are knackered big time too.
Planning to build my own supermoto wheels.

The liner looks OK as far as you can see but the piston seems to have had a partial seizure or at least a hot spot. Really needs the head off to look further, though it looks like the bore and piston are quite clean and unused. You can then check for con rod wear.

The rims should be thrown in the nearest skip! SOOO dangerous!

Thanks Knackered for your feedback.
Yeah, liner looks ok from what I could see.I suppose I need to remove the head. When I will come to do it, I will upload pictures and keep you informed.
And rims, yeah- bad. Do you know if CRM hubs suffer similary? I obviously would like to reuse them.

All aluminium rims suffer if they are not looked after.

When you cut the spokes to discard the rims you'll see for yourself if the hubs are any good, but don't dispair, wheels come up regularly, and you can also use XR250/400/650 wheels but might have to mess about with bearings to make them fit your CRM.

Amazing, and worrying what a shiny rim can be hiding isn't it.
Do a top end service. The wrongly routed cooling pipes might have accounted for the partial seizure, but check for 2T output from the pump,[ which has been covered in the past].

Good morning all!
Thanks for the link Rich, but I think I am after 17" rims(for now). I searched forum, read few things but any advice? I have built loads of bicycle wheels, but never motorcycle. Will see.
Hoping I can get away only with top end...
And I will check oil pump :)
Have a good day!
