speedo gearbox

Post by Dower » 17 Apr 2015, 13:17

Hello. The speedo on my CRM stopped working when I changed the tyres. I've removed everything and checked the speedo cable (Ok), speedo dial (Ok), plastic gear (looks ok). I think the worm drive is at fault? It seems to turn freely in reverse but sticks going forward when spinning the plastic gear. Take the plastic gear out and it spins both ways although there is some movement (up and down). Are these know for being faulty? any other test or thoughts? Thanks very much

Remove it from bike and dismantle
Soak it in WD40 for a while
Clean with brake cleaner or petrol until all dirt and old grease has been removed
Soak in thin oil
Clean with brake cleaner again
Grease and use

Works every time.

Total time less than an hour

Thanks helisupp. I did the WD40 and petrol trick but didn't soak it. I'll give it another go whilst I fix the stud I broke during this process lol.

Right this thing has done my head in now. Stripped and cleaned again and still the same problem. Plastic gear turns the worm drive in reverse but not forward? I've also replaced the washers. I'm thinking of trying the plastic gear before replacing with an LCD speedo. I've seen an XR400 full unit on eBay which looks the same. Does anyone know if it will fit? Thank you

Yes, XR400 speedo drive is the same. I've been through exactly the same as you, but ended up buying a new one.....keep the faith

Fixed for now. I've fitted two new washers and a new plastic gear this evening. Fingers crossed it doesn't wear out quickly like another post I've read. Thanks
