Can some one recomend a gearbox oil for my Crm250 MK3

Post by Bultacobob » 20 Apr 2015, 10:52

Hi Just put on a new set of silicone hoses so had lots of bits off the bike I also changed the gearbox oil using Motoil10-40.
Bike sat for a week whilst waiting for 4mm tube. On reassembly everything was fine until I tried to pull off and the engine stopped. First thoughts I had messed up some sensor, NO it was the clutch plates sticking. On changing the gearbox oil I had flushed it out withe the new oil to remove what was in there which was apparently Silkolene comp gear. So recommendations please, should I stick to mineral 10-30 what did the Honda specify, My XR400 hated fully synthetic (others had the same problem and reverted to semi) so bikes can be a bit sensitive. Please advise.

Cheers
Rob

ATF fluid IMHO. There should be shed loads on this subject archived. Others have their favourite brew as well.

How frequently are you changing the atf fluid?

It depends on the nature of the rides, intensive clutch work will age the oil quicker, generally though every 3/4 rides.
Keep the old oil for brushing on the chain, it won't affect the "O" rings in chains.

Is it practical for road use or do you think you'd have to change the oil every week?

I would have thought road work was a quite low load on the gearbox, and clutch. Remember though, there is no in line filter to catch the harmful suspended particles, so more frequent changes should be the order.
