AR Carb Cleaning Questions

Post by scrubs » 14 Aug 2007, 20:50

I just took the carb off the AR to give it a good clean I have no carb cleaner
so am gonna go for CRMR's Cillit bang approach. This is also my first time
at ever attempting to clean a carb and I am a novice wrencher -- . :|

on the side of a carb is a motor held on my 2 funny torx looking
security bolts. how do I remove these? or do I even have to?
just not sure How I would soak it with not getting the motor wet...

what bits do I need to dismantle and clean?
Is there anything I should be aware of?

I kind of need an 'Idiots guide to cleaning it' If anyone could spare a
couple of mins.

all help appreciated

  an idiots guide written by an idiot
first of all not sure about the black motor on the side (must be an ar thing) im sure someone will put you straight
unscrew throttle slide from the top (where cable enters carb)
remove all the pipes (remembering which goes where)
keeping the carb upside down remove float bowl from the bottom 4 phillips or 8 mm bolts
you should then see the floats and jets
in between your floats you will see a large flat head screw (main jet)
remove that put on one side (remember were it came from)
too the left of that or underneath it depending on which way your holding the carb you will see another smaller flat head screw (idle jet)
remove that (again remember were it goes) if you want to go down the cillit bang route fine but carb cleaner is about £5 from halfords if you buy some fire it through the holes were the jets were and anywere else you can get it
then look at the jets the holes are tiny so poo will easily block them fire cleaner through them and poke a nylon bristle through them when clean replace them
hold the floats in the same position then turn the carb over (right way up)
blow down the hole where the fuel pipe goes and slowly release the floats you should start to hear air goin through the carb then pull the floats back up again (air should stop flowing) this re creates your fuel flow
if air flows and stop when floats are up and down you know everything seals as it should
turn your carb back over andreplace the bowl
connect carb back up and jobs a good un!
if anyone notices anything iv missed please ad to this as iiv had a few guiness

Wow that sounds simple enough, Thank you! I think even I can manage this - it's simpler than I thought, -- An excellent idiots guide thanks again :D

Not looking forward to reinstalling the whole carb mind :?
by the way you know the small coolant? hose that runs from carb to
the head? I think its about 4mm. Anyone know where I can pick
up a new one? I kind of damaged it trying to take it off the carb
as it was stuck pretty good.

it seems braided 4mm hoses are pretty hard to come by..
and I can only find silicon air hose on ebay or the fuel hose
in about 30 meter lengths or something.

The only thing I can add to a really good guide is to take digital photos as you dismantle if you are unsure as to what goes where.

Fuel hose should do. Just pop down to your local garage and ask. I actually removed that whole 'carb heater' section from my previous CRM without any ill effects.

Well Thanks to Mickstoy the carb cleaning was sucessfull!
and there has been a huge difference in tickover since cleaning
it can run at a lot lower revs than before and is running better all round.

inside the carb was pretty good nick but the jets were pretty
blocked.

Just to recap....

I soaked the jets in 'Orange' Cillit bang for about 5 mins.
*do not put screws in there i.e tickover screw* or the
gold dish that fits under the main jet - It will strip them to silver
in a matter of seconds! I learned the hard way.

So just put your jets in there.

I Used the green cillit bang just to degrease the outside
but I reckon any degreaser would have been as good.

I then soaked in meth for a couple of hours and blasted with
carb cleaner as reccomended.

now she's purring.. Apart from one small issue -- nothing to do with the
carb reinstallation mind but read my servo motor post.

Thanks Guys!
