Chain side plates wearing

I have noticed that the side of my chain has been showing sign of rubbing for some time but had convinced myself that it was just on the rubber/plastic chain guide.
Today I stopped to take a photo and
luckily happened to look down at the chain. The split link clip was barely hanging on as half of it had worn away.
Luckily I carry a spare link
Unluckily I found I had lost my wallet again
Luckily I found it after retracing my route for several trails.

Does anyone else suffer this wear on the chain sideplates? and has anyone found a solution?

I will never ever ever carry my wallet in the outside pocket of my jacket again.

Is it because the sprockets, particularly the rear, are out of line?

I don't know why but I always keep a good eye on it then

It is the outside edge of the plates that is wearing. The cam adjusters are set the same but I'll check alignment with a straight edge tomorrow/ There is a lot of float on the frt. sprocket as standard perhaps there is too much?
I was going to fit a new chain runner but the one on the CRM does not have any bearings so I will have to modify the frame
to accept aftermarket ones

I try to line my wheel up by eye to the engine or other fixed marks after I have lined it up with the adjusters. On some bikes you have to adjust a little due to the original not being quite straight or crashes bending things.

The split link is wider than the rest of the chain'so consequently it suffers most of the wear as it rubs through the nylon chain guide.Most new chain kits now come with a soft link as well as the conventional link.The reason we as off roaders persist with a sprung link is it aids wheel removal ect.It is however possible to run with a soft link chain'it just means you have to remove the swinging arm first .

the only area i can see thats rubbing is the area inside the guide.it doesn't cause a problem with the whole chain just polishes the edges of the links but it does wear the sprung clip on the split link.i just replace the splitty every now and again.

there is an awfull lot of lateral float in the front sprocket on mine too ed,but theres no sign of wear on the output shaft??

dont use a soft link because i like to remove the chain fully,clean and soak in oil for a couple of days between rides

ed,you best get that wallet tucked away pretty secure before tommorows ride,otherwise i'll be treating my self to 20 b&h,a 24 pack of guinness and some posh food come lunch time
