Mk 2 oil level sensor

Some advice please folks...
Ive just got round to taking the tank off my Mk 2 and discovered the 2 stroke oil level sensor has been gunged up with silicone sealer all round it, where it push fits into the frame. Im guessing this was an attempt to stop it weeping oil. Its not been that successful! Is this summat that is known to weep or is there something adrift with my sensor?
Any tips appreciated.

Hi KK, My mk2 as always has a slight leak from around the sensor. Every time the tank is off i just give it a quick wipe. It's never got any worse all the time i've had it, so i just learn to live with it, because i cant be assed to drain the oil tank

They all leak somewhat. I removed the sensor, ground down the tube and Aruldited a blanking plate over the top. OK this means I have no means of knowing if I'm out of oil but who trusts these things anyway (apart from Slider) - Most people just fill up the tank regularly.

Aye, I deepened the grooves between the ridges on the body and put a couple of 'O'-rings in. I think I used my lathe, but it is something you could do equally well with a needle file and time.

Mucho thanks chaps, Im resting a little easier now. We use some magic rubber tape called self amalgamating tape at work..Im sure some of you have seen it. Its not sticky, but you stretch it and when it wraps onto itself, it moulds itself into a solid lump. I think I'll try a couple layers of that round the sensor. Its stopping the valve on the kitchen radiator leaking these past 18 months, and me dear old dad managed to wrap it round his AJS petrol tap when it fell apart a long way from home, and it did the trick.
I'll always check the oil, but I do like the idea of the sensor!
Does it warrant a pic?

That tapes brilliant ' i use it every where' spark plug cap' cable joints' ect in fact i carry a length in my break down kit because you can use it to repair a split hose as well.

I see theres lots on Ebay (tape for sale!)

My only tip is, its not UV stable, so it will deteriorate in sunlight. We cover it with a wrap of ordinary electrical insulating tape if its exposed, just to prolong the life.

at what point did i say i trusted it??.at least i know your not spying on my 2t oil tank filling habits as its topped up everytime i use it

My experience is that that goes slimey and nasty in contact with oil. You might want to run a little test off the bike first.
