CRM250 AR starting? anyone? HELP!

Post by corvid » 19 Mar 2008, 02:05

G'day,
Aussie CRM250AR owner here.. I have a 1999 model which only has 2000km's on the clock and It just seems to be a pig to start when cold.
heres my procedure (please tell me if its wrong).
Cold:
1: Turn fuel tap on
2: Put choke on
3: Start Kicking like crazy and it gets no where.. I mean like 20 kicks later.. Im all over and bike isnt running.
4: If i Kick it slowly, and by this i mean slowly but forcefully work the kicker it seems to start easier?! Like WTF is that all about?

Hot:
1: Kick - Starts no problems.. 1 kick and its alive.. perfect.. no complaints.

Anyone Know what direction I should head in?

Thanks,
Lyle

If i'ts like mine mate, you need to head down the gym
I've tried everything, but if i dont start it for a couple of days, it always takes a good work out to get it going. And like you say, once it's been run, it'l start no problem all day, even the next day, but leave it longer than that and it's a right pig

ps Mines a MK2 :D

Mine's a Mk3, but if it's stood for some time it can take a bit of jumping up and down.

The best trick I've come across is to tilt the bike over until petrol comes out the overflow on the carb, then yank it upright, bung the choke on and give it a prod.

It'll generally fire up second kick then.

Give it a try and let us know how you get on.

Here' s my procedure for my AR

PETROL ON CHECK
CHOKE ON CHECK

IGNITION OFF CHECK

SELECT FIRST GEAR CHECK

ROCK BIKE BACKWARDS AND FORWARDS FOR ABOUT 30/45 SECS CHECK

SELECT NEUTRAL CHECK

All of the above is performed in the privacy of a closed garage.

WHEEL BIKE OUTSIDE CHECK

TURN IGNITION ON DOUBLE CHECK
ONE FIRM SHARP KICK. STAND PROUDLY BY CHUGGING BIKE CHECK works on mine every time regardless of interim laid up time.
Failing the above not working buy a house halfway up a hill m8

Sometimes if my AR won't start, i turn the ignition off then on again, this seems to help.. Is the kill switch dodgy?
Side stand switch dodgy? :!:

I think sometimes just that short pause in between kicking is enough to allow the system to function correctly .
It's something i have noticed very occasionally when the bike is warm' then it will just burst into life on the next kick as clean as you like' :!: havn,t figured it yet 'but it's so rare i don't worry about it.

as with any 2 stroke, you need to prime the cylinder. Mikes method, after hamsters is the old trick for starting old CR's and is always a winer.Just turn the fuel off before tiping the bike over as you need to mpty the float bowl, then either rock the bike in gear or kick slowly with the ignition off. 1 sharp kick "should" get her going! Good luck. Jon

Modern fuels 'go off' very quickly, especially when stored in a small quantity with access to air, like in a carb float bowl sitting over a warm engine, (as quickly as a couple of days). This gone off fuel loses its flammibilty, making the bike difficult to start, you have to turn the engine over until fresh fuel enters from the tank allowing the bike to start. This is demonsrated by Slow Hamster tipping his bike over draining the dud fuel out, allowing fresh fuel in which then makes the bike easy to start.
If you are leaving your bike standing for more than a few days , you should drain the carb out, or as I do, turn the fuel tap off and leave the bike running for a couple of minutes which will drain the carb for you. Then next time you use it turn the fuel on, which will allow fresh fuel into the carb. The bike should then start first time. The fuel in your tank should be ok for about 6 months.

Hope this helps.

Yes a good point Pmac i forgot to mention i turn the petrol off 200 yds before my house on the way home 'helps to stop that emulsifying in carb and blocking the pilot jet.Have you checked the pilot circuit? if not thats a problem area'get some carb/injection cleaner and give the jets and circuits a good blast out with that.

Your welcome 'question is how you gonna exercise that right leg now, without all that kicking its going to suffer from atrophy pretty quick.
