steering head bearing seals - need one...

Post by wb » 08 Nov 2008, 17:01

Can anyone give me the part number or, better still, an alternative source for the steering head bearing seals (trashed the lower one removing the bearing - like you do...) Are upper and lower bearing seal the same?

TIA

Anyone? Can't believe I'm the only owner who's ever encountered this problem...

Cheers

:D There have been quite a few post on this subject , so you may wish to avail yourself of the search facility.
I have never had to replace the head bearings yet !!! but if you can , or indeed if you have them of already ,measure them up with some verniers ,and try one of the proprietary bearing stockist ,such as ALL BALLS , OR SIMPLY BEARINGS .
Good luck

Thanks. I've tried the seach facility every which way and can't find the part number for, or an alternative supplier for the seals alone - which is all I need as I have suitable bearings to hand. I'll have another go though in case I've missed it.

I have a digi copy of the parts book with exploded diagrams but, infuriatingly, it lacks the pages with the part numbers themselves. I've scoured the 'net and can't find a digi copy anywhere, which is really unusual as I have .pdf manuals for all my other import bikes - and Yamaha, for example, make pretty much all parts manuals available online through their central site. Anyone got a proper copy of teh parts book for a MK.2 they can mail me or post a link to?

Cheers

Have you tried Leisure Trail , or a main dealer, some times for the pitance you save it's not worth all the shopping around and postage .

Yes, I's not about saving money so I can order the bearing seals through Leisuretrail easily enough, but really I'm still going to need a proper parts book if I'm going to bother doing anything much with the CRMs (I have 2 Mk.2s), as I do all my own spannering and it'd likely be quicker and easier to order bits through my local Honda dealer in the longer term

Part numbers are also often a good indicator of alternative sources for spares of course as they are likely to indicate the original origin of the part if it's not CRM specific. Most of my bikes are grey imports and I think I actually get some weird pleasure from finding alternative sources of parts - and compatibility with other models etc. I reckon it's a bit of a sickness really, lol. But then, for many, simply playing around with old strokers instead of simply bolting a can and a power commander to a CBZXGSXR1's etc., at all is often seen as 'eccentric' at best... But for me it's strokers all the way. You just can't beat that strocker buzz...

Cheers

Trashed my lower seal on my mk1 when I did the head bearings.
Both upper and lower seals look to be the same.
While your at it, it's worth drilling and tapping the headstock, and fitting a grease nipple.
Though, if like me, you don't replace the seal, the grease works it's self out, landing on the front mudguard. DOH!

Cheers, Steve.

Not so sure about a grease nipple on the headstock as there is so much space underneath. You need a lot to fill the void :!:

Upper and lower seal look to be marked as different parts in the diagrams from the parts book I have (no actual part numbers, as mentioned), but the upper seal fitted below the lower bearing and into the frame recess nicely enough so I used the upper seal on the lower to allow me to reassemble with the new bearings. In the longer term though I need to put a seal above the upper bearing to afford it some protection. It won't get that much off road use in all honesty, but it really needs a seal of some sort as currently it's juts an open sewer of grease, lol.

Really I'm a bit more concerned about the lack of a proper parts book though. There must be a full digi copy out there somewhere, surely? Been to busy to check with Honda directly, but life with imports is a real pain without one.

Mk3 bearings are 91015-425-831 x2. Top seal is 53214-KA3-732. Bottom seal is 53214-KA4-701.

I think these are the same across all Mks. The seals are certainly the same but the Mk1 book shows spherical roller bearings rather than needle rollers. My Mk1 has been fitted with needle rollers but I don't know the numbers  . I suspect that the needle rollers are an 'upgrade'.

:D Steve's right about the grease nipple trick ,i did my KDX when i had it and it took 2 grease cartridges before it started to ooze out , best part of a kg of grease , and it's high up in the frame :( :( not good for handling .

Great stuff. Very many thanks for the part no. It's very much appreciated. I'll get a pair ordred and geta seal above that upper bearing. I'll leave the old upper seal on the lower bearing until I next replace the bearings or it proves to be a problem.

Cheers
