do the 12 volt test and see if it works!
a nackerd cdi will let u know by smoking and sizzling! :)

hope this helps
a knackered CDI does not always let u know by smokin' and sizzling!
AR's rock!!!
TwinAir filter, Braided Brake Hoses, Swingarm/Shock bearings done!, Rear Shock overhauled and customised by G-Force, 14-44 Gearing, Exhaust decoked (fun with Caustic Soda!), DEP silencer.

But this is a Mk1 - They very rarely have problems with CDIs. (Unlike others  )

It is also quite a coincidence to happen at exactly the same time as a rebuild :?: .

I could go with the reg/rec but I do think that is unlikely.

:? Is it worth checking the low tension circuit to verify that pulse is only very infrequent :?:

Ok I sat with a tester and this is what i have worked out. The earth is ok. The Kill Switches are ok. The Stator/Generator is producing power. The Ignition Pick ups are not working. This could be due to the CDI and the Pick Ups. I spoke to a mate who does wiring, he recons it is the pick ups. Honda says they have sold hardly any CDI's for the MK1 as they don't give to much trouble. So I guess off to the Auto Sparkie i go. How do you test the Pick Ups or CDI, does any body know.

Thanks
Jonty

I don't know about the pickups on a CRM but these rarely fail on other bikes (especially two at the same time). I would double check the wiring, the air-gaps (missing shims?) and make sure there is no rubbish stuck to them or the flywheel. If it worked before the rebuild it is likely something simple.

:D Sorry, I haven't followed this conclusively, how big a rebuild was this, full Monty?, or just top end?

Full Monty. Stripped engine to replace seals, gaskets, Most Bearings, replaced suspension bearings seals. The Top end was done not so long ago, still has bore marks. I do agree it is really really odd that it stops working after i put evrything back together. I did try to stick away from the wiring as much as i can. What senses can cause the bike to not fire. ie oil sensor, side stand, etc.

Nothing apart from ignition key, on/off switch and sidestand ............. Or shorts elsewhere in the system.

The pickups generate a pulse/break/spike in current on each revolution when a particular part of the generator hub goes past.

Thanks Knackered. She is GOING!!! There was a short in the wires, under the protective casing as it comes out the Genni Cover, obviously when i took it off the wires crossed. Thank goodness!!! Thanks for your help! Knackered is right the pick ups and CDI hardly ever need to be replaced on the MK1

Agreed haha! The balancer is a bit noisy so i might whip it out and get it rebuilt as the bearings were good. But i will replace the roller bearing anyway! This bike for its age has some steam and it sounds awesome!!! Plus it starts first kick which is unheard of for a 2 stroker!!!

Thanks again guys great help

Possibly, but now showing their age with perishing insulation to essential wiring components. ;)
Good job the frames aren't made of timber, they'd have dry rot by now
Glad he got it sorted though, logically, it had to something to do with the strip down.
My next suggestion was to be a closer look at the pick ups, honest :o

I must admit (grudgingly) that the Mk3s are the second most reliable but the best bikes as standard (Taking looks, performance, reliability etc. into consideration).

Followed by the Mk1, and more distantly by the Mk2 and AR tied together .

To be honest i have seen only one Mk2 and none of the others. The Mk2 had finished rings that had bent in the barrel. So i might be a bit one sided haha. The most reliable bike i have ever owned, part from the CRM has got to be a Yamaha DT50, It never ever died. We set it on fire by accident, the piston was very badly worn and it just carried on going. We replaced one chain and one re sprocket in the whole 12 years we owned it. It taught me and both my brothers how to ride.
