Balancer shaft + clutch arm

Mk3 whining like a mini jumbo gonna tackle the balancer shaft reading through the threads it seems pretty straight forward little help please i assume the gears are marked for correct placement for timing with the crank also got a oil weep from the top of my clutch arm above the sprocket on my MK2 will the shaft lift out once the cables disconnected got the new seal ready thanx in advance

The gears are marked - you will find this when you take off the clutch cover.

The arm will come out if you pull, but I'm not sure it will go back so easily if you don't relieve the tension on the clutch push rod by taking off the clutch cover.

Thanx for that i deal with BSL at work and im trying to purchase a heavier duty/better quality needle roller for the balancer probably c3 rated i will post what info i get and an improvement in getting oil to flow through the bearing.

The best way I have found is to throw a whip when your jumping, too the left sometimes and then too the right on others.
This really gets the gearbox oil right in amongst the rollers, and the more level you can get the whip, of course the more oil you get in the rollers, :D ;) as if.
Which one wears the quickest, the internal, without the seal, or the one behind the balance weight? I'd be interested to know.
Although a C3 bearing sounds like a fix, aren't there issue's with using to good a quality bearing,i.e.they don't actually last as long as a standard bearing?

Hi Mike we run some pretty self destructive machines at work and we went with SKF C3 bearings as a trial 2 years ago and got twice the life out of them running under extreme conditions of 80+ degrees and 2000 psi of pressure so im hopeful they should stand up ill compare prices and post the results may try the whip option though a crack on the back seat might speed her up a bit lol.

Ended up getting the bearings from LT made the removal shaft on the lathe and miller ta Knackered worked a treat but struggled with the clutch nut after mucho swearing liberated a dewalt rechageable impact driver from work and off in 10 seconds the balancers well chattered on the needle surface but ive found on the parts shelf at work a 22mm bore 25mm od hardened sleeve so im gonna turn the shaft down to 22 and we have a electic field heater at work so its 120 degrees and shrink it on nice cheap option ill try and supply pics as its a nice/cheap fix :)

Slightly modified knackereds removal shaft tapped the end 6mm and turned a taper fitting for the needle roller OD and turned and parted a piece of alloy for the oil seal so its now a 1 piece tool for complete shaft removal and fitting im lucky i can make theses things anyone struggling PM me and its available on a pay for postage thingy on trust http://img833.imageshack.us/i/001hoi.jpg/

Hey Matty i really meant as a borrow return sort of job if your desperate i could make you one as a one off i changed the shaft/bearing/seal with this in 5 minutes could of taken hours and the shaft repair i had was a success any local engineering shop can grind and replace the bearing sleeve cheaper than replacement cant think what price id put on one maybe £20 or so

Hi Mate, Well I would like to have a tool just so I have one, I have the same problem as what you had my bikes whining when you rev the bike the whining volume increases and decreases as you go up and down revs but as soon as I find out if its defiantly that I will pm you to make me one if you don't mind £20 sounds good is that posted :?:

Thats ok Matty remove your generator cover and youll see the balancer just waggle it and you will feel the free play itll be the needle roller surface it dosent get a great oil supply i filled the void with oil when i was rebuilding the engine prior to fitting the roller bearing and also put a very light smear of rocol sapphire endure on the needle roller its £80 for 100g gulp (google it) but is used on fighter jet engine bearings probs the best out there as lubes go if you have the shaft off me ill mail a small sealed bag of it for you.

I've got around to having a look at my bike I've taken the generator cover off and checked what play I have in the bearings, what sort of play am I meant to have :?: as I do have up and down play would you say it is the balance shaft by the sounds of what I have to say what you think :?:
