rear brake caliper options; broken bleed nipple
i've snapped the bleed nipple (bleeder) on me back brake caliper & mulling over the options.
i'll probly try drillin' it out, does any body know what thread the bleeder is?
i've seen in FAQ that XR400 caliper is a replacement.
i reckon that an engineer with a spark eroder could clean up the bust bit of bleeder in the caliper.
i guess i'll post in for sale/wanted.
any more ideas

Re: rear brake caliper options; broken bleed nipple
Won't one those left hand thread stud extractors bite in? There is already the hole in the middle for it to bite into.
You mighty also think about replacing the standard nipple with one of those self bleed ones off ebay.

Re: rear brake caliper options; broken bleed nipple
Ta FMTB,
yeah, i've had a bad experience wiv those stud extractors before. the remains of the nipple are well corroded into the caliper and i reckon there'd be a good chance of snapping the extractor & then there is a bit of hardened steel stuck in the hole which'll make the drilling out operation more difficult. it is another idea tho'
i've not come across those self bleed ones, will have a search
It looks like i will be able to source a secondhand caliper through this forum so, hopefully, won't even have to attempt to get the remains of the bleeder out.

As Fishy said, if you've already mentally written off the calliper, have a go. I would pick up on Fishy's idea, but use a bit more aggression. By that I mean, remove the calliper, and get the left handed extractor biting and ready to go, then get some real heat on the job, butane gun or similar, get it smoking hot, then hit it with the WD, and then have a go with the extract tool.
It might take a couple of go's, but this will generally yield a result.
Best to have some form of fire suppressant handy when playing with fire.
Good luck.

I always try with boiling water from kettle first, before blow gun. undo when hot, if it fails get blow gun on it.

anyways the rebore was alright til my preignition dieseled it.. but yes it does look quite like some one attacked with a file now

I been working on my hornet this week - mostly tarting up rear sets and paintin inside the house whilst the missus is away...

hopefully friday gonna get my engine out of the CRM.. seems like another rebore is on the cards... good job I followed steve's advice and didnt take it to 68mm already!
back on topic..
I had some luck with the extractors before in my carb - frankly I was amazed what it bit into - especially since I fuçked the first go up and had to got up a size!

Re: rear brake caliper options; broken bleed nipple
Can`t you drill it out slightly bigger and then just find a bleed nipple with a larger thread, there are plenty of different size bleed nipples to choose from! got to be worth a try, yes on the extractor if that snaps off its wire eroder time to get the hardened steel out!

Re: rear brake caliper options; broken bleed nipple
Thanks for the suggestions peeps, this really is a magnificent forum.
When i busted the bleeder i had the caliper off & torched the nipple until it was as near cherry red as i could get it, then i sprayed with a product called shock & unlock which is a combined freezer & penetrant spray & then got good contact with an 8mm socket.
It crossed my mind that leaving the caliper in a bucket of salty water might rust it out

No, not really, sound's like the little perisher wasn't up for moving if it had that sort of treatment.
What I was shown many moons ago was to try tightening the offending fixing first, especially screws, if you can get smidge of a tighten, they normally undo easy as then. If not, you still have some good edges for a second bite at it, simples
