powerband?

Post by malky » 15 Feb 2005, 21:25

i have just got my bike back on the roadafter it sitting for a year in my garage.1998AR
my problem is this.
sometimes my bike has no top end powerband and the exhaust note is high pitched tinney sound but with grunt from low revs then after i have stopped and turned off ignition and started again the exhaust note is deep[as if blown]there is not a lot of power low down the revs then the powerband is back, grip onto handlebars tight kinda thing. the bike has a full D E P system
ANY ADVICE WELCOME

have you checked your power valve is free and not sticky ,, take the cover off and see if it freely moves

if its the CDI you will probably be better off also changing the reg/rec, both are very expensive so contact dave silver and although it take three weeks you save 25% (£120ish). i know i`ve been there!

hi makly,
iv had this sort of problem before but mine turned out to be the spring loaded cable going into the pv houseing.
so before you go spending all your money check the following .

1, the spring loaded cable has a tube inside it going into the pv houseing this moves into the houseing when the spring is compressed, ie when the servo drives the valve open . this jams up on my bike when i tighten the cover and thus giving me low top end, something im sorting out now ,

2 remove and check all cable conectors to make sure you have no dirty, loose or dry joints right back to your pmg unit including the earth ,give them a spray with wd40.

3, remove the cover of the servo motor and check the grub screw it not loose also give it a turn and listen and feel for any damaged or slipping coggs, you should feel a slight resistance when you turn this.
you can if you want check the resistance of the pot it should go up to 5k when you turn the wheele . testing between the light green dark green and red and white cables . if when you turn it if you keep loosing all resistance this could idicate a dry pot so get the wd40 out.

4, remove the generator cover and check the conections of the ignition triggers \"the two square things sitting over it , as well as making your plug spark at the right time im pritty sure the also tell the pmg when to open the pv valve .could be wronge but its worth a look.

5, this you may wanna do first voltage test .you should be looking for around 13 volts dc + or - a bit .you will need to give the bike some hard reving when testing to prove your rec/regulator is working if you get high readings its more than likely your pmg and rec/reg are stuffed.

my bikes of the road and in bits at the mo but when i sort it out i will spend a bit of time messuring resistances, voltages ect and try and make some sort of check list up. good luck for now mate hope you get it sorted.

regards timo
