Puncture prevention products??

Post by Beanie » 18 Aug 2004, 21:57

Hi All,

When riding off-road I get a pang of anxiety regarding punctures as I don't carry any kit to sort it out.

I was wondering whether the spray products that you put in the tyre that coat it and if you get a puncture they seal it instantly are worth buying? Has anyone used them? Are they any good?

Or even the ones you carry that you use when you have got a puncture?

Any recommendations chaps as I'd like to use one or the other to avoid a long walk!! :o

I use the green slime stuff, I tried it on a non fitted inner tube that I know had a puncture, it lost a bit of air before the gloop oozed out, but I've not patched it and it still holds air (it's just started going down slightly over a couple of weeks).....that was 12 mths ago

the heavest duty inner tubes you can find is a good measure too.

i've gone through loads of selants before, the stuff people swear by is Ultraseal, its expensive but can seal almost anything. and its rated to very high speeds. i got a puncture on my roadie soon after fitting a new tyre, i had this in it and it kept it sealed for the life of that tire even though i held 130mph often.
police use it, racers use it, the army use a thicker version, makes their cars litraly bullet proof. £25 a bottle though :?

How many tyres can you do with one bottle of the Ultraseal stuff then?

one £25 bottle does two tyres, i guess its worth it on road bikes when good tyres cost over £200 a pair. Thing is i've never tried the stuff on tubed tyres.

Something i once saw was tubes made by slime, they where for mountain bikes and would seal most punctures better than just normal slime. do they do it for big bikes though?
