17" road wheels

Post by bobbler » 18 Dec 2020, 18:56

Firstly apologies for all the questions recently.

After feeling like I'm hitting plenty of dead ends trying to find a set of crm specific road wheels i was wondering if anyone had a list of suitable wheels that will fit with minimal modifications?

So far I've read wheels that will fit with little or no mods:
Xr (2×× 4xx 6xx) front & rear
CR/F front and rear
Cagiva Mito Rear
CBR 400 front
NSR 250 front, not sure about the rear

Do these look right and are there other wheels i could be looking at? Would the likes of the old dominator wheels work (NX/SLR650) or maybe even a 90s NSR125?

Cheers

The XR are a straight fit (more or less), not sure on the others. Maybe they can be made to fit, but unless you can machine your own spacers and such, I would want to know what's involved before I committed money too it. They do come up 2nd hand now and again, but these bike are getting old. There is a CRM on ebay with some spares including supermoto wheels and the brake caliper spacer. Its been on there a while, the seller maybe interested in selling the wheels on separately, worth a try anyway.

Did you get in contact with Talon? I've got a feeling the bikes are too old for them to be interested in now.

SM Pro can deferentially supply supermoto rims and spokes. Then its just a mater of finding some CRM or XR hubs to fit them too. I believe they also do a build service, so if you get the hubs first and send them to them and they will build them for you. Be aware CRM have 36 spokes (I think) most manufactures are 32. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Thank you, that's some great help and info.

Spacers aren't really an issue as I can get some made at work but like you said it's a bit of an expensive mistake if I get the wrong wheels at the start. I have tried to contact talon and the message I'm getting back from most suppliers is that the hubs are no longer available so if I can find any and a wheel builder that would be a bonus.

I've seen the bike you mention on ebay but the seller does say they won't split in the ad although I was thinking about waiting a few weeks and asking the question. They can only say no at the end of the day. If I had the cash I would have possibly gone for that whole deal to be honest but the CRM I'm getting is coming in a deal with a trade for my bike.

Thanks

I've had a reply from Talon who are still doing wheels and hubs for the xr400 from 1996 onwards. Including 3.5x17 and 4.2.5x17 rims and spokes they are a shade over £1100 with a 4 week wait.

A bit over my budget but I thought I'd post up here in case anyone else is looking.

I fitted XR650 wheels. The front goes on to Mk2 and above without any problems the back needs new spacers including the internal one for the hub (the XR650 is 20mm spindle the CRM is 17mm). I think you can get away with one standard bearing but the other needs to be turned to fit.

Thanks, that could be another option to look out for, I can get alloy spacers made at work. Do you know if they were the xr650l or xr650r wheels? I think I read somewhere the hubs are different.

I'm not 100% but I think they were 650R.
