Knackered CDi ???

Post by Chris » 30 Nov 2004, 12:35

Help,

Think i have a Cdi problem............

The power valve \"flickers\" when you rev the engine, but does not seem to open up. When riding the bike, its OK up 25% throttle, but as soon as you open it up any further, it just feels like the choke is on.....and sounds like wauuuuurrrbbbbbbp-fart-fart !!.
I have done all the usual checks: sidestand/killswitch/thoroughly cleaned the carb/new plug/new fuel/airfilter/checked the reed vale/changed pipes & silencers. The bore piston/rings are all in A1 condition, cleaned inspected & new gaskets. Compression is really good. It starts really easily and idles smooth as soon as its warmed up.

Anything i have missed out....anyone ??.

If not, it looks like a new CDi & Rec.

:?

Disconnect the PV cables and the PV moves freely......

Should the PV arm move anti-clockwise, when the revs rise (from the left, looking at the PV arm) ?.

I'll wip the pipe off and check the point at which the PV is fully open and mark it on the casing/PV arm.

don't think it should go Anti clockwise - if yours can are you sure it's returning to the endstop at tickover ? if not then all the canble adjustments are probably out.

The PV arm should rotate anti-clockwise.....if you take the pipe off and look up the exhaust port, the PV is easily visible. When the marks are lined up on the arm & casing, the PV is fully open...blocking a percentage of the port. When the PV is fully rotated anti-clockwise, the PV is fully shut.

Hmm looks like a new CDi & Rec/Reg...Ouch !!

Hi Chris,

Are you sure this is not a fuel problem??? Worth double checking before lashing out on a new CDI (loads of money) :(

Has the exhaust ‘note’ changed since you’ve had this problem? In other words…does the bike sound noisier now? Especially from the expansion chamber area! It would be very noticeable if you’ve got a FMF or DEP pipe on.
This would be a sure sign that the CDI is heading to its maker.

If you do need a new cdi? :( Try the link below, cheaper than most places…. if you don’t mind waiting a little while for it. Good idea to replace the Reg/Rec at the same time. As this seems to be the main cause of crm CDI’s going tit’s up :(

Good luck
Steve.
