my bike still aint running

Post by pearse15 » 19 Mar 2005, 17:20

I've been having 4 months of madness. My bike still aint running right.

Today i completely stripped down my carb. piece by piece. They were all left to soak clean. They were spotless afterwards. I bought a repair kit and replaced all the seals today. It's had new jets to.

I've been supsecting my tank to be the cause of all my problems. so today i borrowed a friends tank to swap onto mine. Just got it all rigged up bout 30mins ago. Wont even bloody start. It had a cough once (bout 50 kits into it). Checked the sparkplug and it's oiled up. Cleaned it up, heated it up and shoved it back in. Done this 3 times with the same affect. Check for a spark and it's sparking. How big should the spark be?

I'm so stressed with it as i aint been on it once. Aint got enough to take it to garage but it looks like that's the only option. Does anyone have any suggestions? I'd really appreciate it as i'm going bald at 21!!

thanx again, pearse

sorry to hear your still having hassle mate,
and looking back it looks like youv tride alsorts, have you tride swapping the condencer, im not sure of the relationship it has with the cdi,but when iv had bikes with points ,if the condencers was stuffed the bike was really erattic or not start at all,
another problem i had, was the coil arking on the frame to ages ot find the fault as i was still getting a spark on the plug . it was only when i kicked it over in the dark that i found it, change the coil and the bike was fine,
good luck timo

Pearse,

Im sorry to hear you still have problems.

The spark should be a bright blue colour. Have you tried taking the supressor cap off and checking the spark from the end of the HT lead to the cylinder head? Use some insulated pliers and get your mate to kick it over.

Did you try a compression test? What readings did you get? It should be over 100psi.

Im wondering whether youve got a wire shorting out somewhere. Ive had a couple of problems on mine where wires became crossed up, once in the headlight and once in the tail-light and indicators - sometimes wouldnt start at all. Also have you tried bypassing the kill switch? This has been known to screw up.

If youve got fuel, got a spark then the bike should start or at least try - I think youve got an intermittent electrical fault.

Whereabouts do you live?

Sorry about late reply.

Just given it another go today and still no luck. It wont even turn over. I've bypassed the kill switch and the spark looks the same. I've haven't swapped any electrical parts over as i don't wanna shaft my mates. I've booked it into LT for the 6th of april. so fingers crossed it'll get sorted then. I don't think that it's carb problem now. I think your right with the electrical.

The problem is, i've checked the wiring diagram and eveything runs back to the cdi. so checking things is difficult, as cdi controls everything

My bike hasn't got any clocks, ignition or lights. I bought it like this. So whether this is causing me any problems i'm not sure.

The cdi looks like a new cdi. The servo looks new. Where is the rectifier and condensor? can't seem to see it. Wondering whether i've bought someone elses headache.

I've completely rebuilt carb again today, and as mentioned in another thread i've noticed on a drawing a baffle which sits between the emulsion tube and main jet. Mine hasn't got this. LT aren't sure if this would cause any problems. And i'm not sure either. it's just strange how it wont start now.

HTLEAD seems ok, the ignition coil seems ok. Maybe i've got a problem inside the engine with my stator or something. Fresh outta ideas. Like i said i've given up. so LT can take over from here.

I aint done a compression test as i aint got the gear. It kicks ok but thats all i know. I live in lincoln to which is 30 miles from nottingham

thanks, adam

The regulater/rectifyer sits.slightly backward of the footrest under but behing the rubbry muckgard on the swingarm.it upsidedown connected to the frame. It looks like a dirty alloy heatsink with wires coming out ..There has been posts recently about testing one of these and hot wiring the bike with a 12 volt battery ..

Took my bike to LT today. leaving it with them for rest of week. First impressions aren't good.

Because all my electrics have been gashed it caused loads of grief. The poor running will be caused by the lack of capacitor in the ignition area. Also the side stand has been disconnected, all the wires are shorted together. he said this is shorting it out. Reckons there's a good chance my CDI is dead. Absolutely gutted. If above proves to be true, i'll have now choice but to sell it. Maid mistakes before by chucking loads of money at bikes/cars. Not this time. fingers crossed, i'll keep you all informed

that can't be good - I know what you mean about throwing good money after bad - just bought a cheap car off someone at work 'very reliable' etc - bloody thing died after 3 weeks !

Here's hoping the news isn't too bad - even if it's a dead CDI it's probably still cheaper to replace that than take the hit of selling a non runner and shelling out for another bike isn't it?
