wiring into CDI on an AR
Is there a kind CRM 250 AR owner out there who could confirm that the wiring into my CDI is correct? It seems that somebody tampered with it and as a result burnt the CDI
.
Facing the CDI - ie looking at the backs of the two plugs - and with the plug-clips on top, this is what mine looks like:
The black plug:
(left to right top row): 1 blue/green, 2 pink, 3 pale green/black, 4 pale green/yellow,
5 pale green/white, 6 pink/green
(left to right bottom row): 1 red/white, 2 yellow/blue, 3 blue/green, 4 pale green, 5 white, 6 blue/yellow
The white plug:
(left to right top row): 1 green/brown, 2 red, 3 black/green, 4 pink/white,
5 black/white, 6 green
(left to right bottom row) : 1 green/white, 2 white/green, 3 white/black, 4 pink/black, 5 black/yellow, 5 green/light blue
A million thanks!

wiring diagram for AR? wishful thinking...
Thanks a lot Bruce: it's a great help and relief to know the
I don't suppose you know of anywhere to get the wiring diagram for our model do you? Now that I know the wires are all correct at the CDI, I'd like to check the whole circuit because the guy I got the bike off was adament that the old CDI burnt as a result of someone tampering with the wiring.
I'm still a bit nervous about putting $500 into the bike (not to mention the hassle it's been getting it out here to Tanzania) and watching it go up in smoke... But maybe I'll just have to take the plunge.
Thanks again.

AR Wiring
The only wiring diagram I have seen is the one in th AR supplement of the leisure trail manual. unfortunately it has no colours. [http://www.offwidth.co.uk/bike/crm_rebuild/crm250.pdf]
The most common cause of CDI failure is the regulator/rectifier failing first, allowing excess voltge to the CDI. Best replace this as a matter of course. There are many places to obtain a reg/rec.[http://www.electrexworld.co.uk] these people built a replacement for me using a bigger case with more cooling. I have mounted it on a bracket where the toolbox used to be. Other people say that any reg/rec with suitable voltage/wattage will do.
This forum is full of CDI problems and soloutions and is a fine source of information browse through.
I hope to have been some help.

OK, I know I'm a pain in the - been told many times.
But your info is gold to me, because browsing isn't that easy at the moment - the big water shortages throughout East Africa mean (among the infinitely worse consequences) massive power rationing (during the 10/24 hours that we've got power, half the time the server is down).
Before posting my first message I had tried looking through past forums to check about wire colours but (on the times I didn't time out) I didn't find anything relevant.
So, since you have been such a hero so far, I'll bombard you again: flick the middle one when you've had enough...
1. Could you give me the extra bit on the address to link me to that AR supplement you mentioned?I tried the link you put up but only fell on the same workshop manual that I have, and that doesn't mention the AR. Or am I being a useless plonker as usual? (A couple of weeks ago, I asked a very helpful guy from Leisure Trail [over the phone] about my problem and gathered that Honda had changed the wire colouring several times. That was why I was so pleaseed to hear that somebody had the same ting as me...)
2. Electrex sorted me out beautifully with an alternator for my old ('87) XL600: less than half the price of Honda and no hicups after at least 18000kms of daily run about town and over 3000km off-road through the Maasai step and down lake Tanganyika. Naturally, I have kept all their details, but a special reg/rect with more cooling sounds like just the trick for the warm climate here. You don't happen to have an invoice/PO/receipt number for the one they made for you that I can quote to order from them, do you? Personally, I try to add several pinches of salt to what 'other people say', especially the ones that sell you 'genuine' Honda parts down here...
As I said, your information is worth gold.
Cheers

I have found my receipt for my reg/rec it is not very informative.
I have not been able to load the wiring diagram on to this site (due to my own incompetance, I'm sure.) If you send me your e-mail address I will send the supplement and my reg/rec receipt number.

Re: wiring into CDI on an AR
I have the info on my rectifier from electrex world limited, the address is Units 43-45 Vanalloys Business Park, Stoke Row, Oxon, RG9 5QW. The part no is RR125. It is a lot bigger than the stock one, I fitted mine to the back of the airbox. I made a top hat from 3mm ali, so there is an air gap between the airbox and the rectifier, hope this helps I,ll put some pics up when I get the bike back from the garage, I,ve had the wheels and hubs powdercoated, I,m just waiting for the stainless steel spokes to arrive. Fallen Mike is going to be quite jealous when he sees the colour, they are his sort of red
