Went to start my bike after leaving it stood for a couple of weeks - turned on the fuel and it just p****s out of the overflow tube on the float chamber.

My guess is the floats are stuck, but anybody suggest anything else to check whilst I'm at it.

Also, if I loosen the hose clamps can I twist the carb slightly to get at the bowl without removing the whole carb?

Hiya mate, it seems me and you share the same problems
this happened to me last week, I would say your right in the float
assumption. Someone suggested me to give the float chamber a
small tap first, just incase they are stuck.

I think twisting the carb all way round will be slightly awkward
I'm not 100% certain but I don't think it will work but will only take
you a few moments to check, try the tapping method first.

by the way, after much faffing (on my belhalf) I Fitted the DEP!

scoob it'll either be the floats stuck as you say or sh* in the needle valve seat that wont allow it to seal properly

just realised mine Is doing the same again
only when set to reserve again, I could have sworn I set the height right.
I wish they made some kind of gizmo that made pulling the carb out
less pain in the arse.

Scrubs - Have you tried pulling the petrol pipe off the carb and seeing if the petrol flows from the tap when the tap is in the 'on' and 'res' position?

Excuse the suggestion if you have done this already.

I hadent checked mate but just done so now and it flows out on both posistions, I take it I need to lower the float height a bit (and not heighten)?

scrubs,if its only doing it when the fuel tap is set to reserve its very doubtfull it'll be the float height,if it was it would overflow in the on position aswell.
sounds like theres dirt/debris in the bottom of your tank and when you switch to reserve its going straight into the carb and jamming the needle valve open(it doesn't take a lot!).you can either drain the tank and clean it(check the old fuel for signs of dirt) or fit a decent fuel filter or do both just to be sure,i've had this problem after stoopidly using an old fuel container!

I will drain and clean it now and see what gives!

Hmmmm.. When draining the tank I noticed that The fuel does
not come on when set to full on posistion as previously tested.

how do I go about fixing the tap?

simply unbolt the tap from the tank and slide it out. you can very carefully pull the filter off the tap. unscrew the sump off the bottom of the tap and remove the filter from there also. Now blow through the main pipe and the recessed (reserve) holes with carb cleaner. this should get all the crap out. In the Haynes tradition, instalation is the reverse of removal.

Cheers mate managed to get it off.. Ok I am more puzzled now.
I cleaned it and it appears fine If I blow down the (tank end) teat with the tap removed I can feel air coming out in both posistions and but not in the off
position that would suggest that it was all ok...So I put it back together
and I still have the same problem - no fuel when set to on posistion

on a good note I realised I had messed up measuring the floats
the first time - like a true nobber. It was the first time I had done it
so wasent aware that you set the height when they are balancing on their
sweet spot. I just turned the thing completely upside down and measured
from there

Found the time to service the carb - one question - what's the easiest way of blocking off the pipes when you take them off the carb?

Do you mean the coolant pipes
