Rear wheel bearings

Post by rhysdad » 01 Jan 2008, 20:33

I think mine need replacing, bit of a whine coming from the back around 60mph. How easy to do for a basic mechanic please lads?

If the wheel bearings have gone you should be able to feel some play when you grab the wheel at 12 and 6 O Clock and try to twist it side to side. If there is no play I would leave them alone but if I was keen I might try to tease the seal back and add some grease.
The whine may be coming from the knobbly tyres on tarmac?
If the wheel bearings have gone it is not a big job to knock them out and knock new ones in.
I think wheel bearings are the only ones I have not done yet on my bike (I've done the suspension, head bearings etc.)

as Ed said its probably your knobblies doing the whining.the tip about peeling the seals back and filling them with grease is a good un and one i do,maintenance wise after around 10 rides.
if you decide to replace the bearing, you need a good drift and hammer to knock the bearings through from the opposite side.just remember the sprocket side has the screw in seal cap that needs to be removed before knocking the bearing out.
again, remove one of the seals on the new bearings and pack with grease then refit the seal before fitting them to the wheels, you'll be suprised how little grease is in them from the manufacturer
