NEW REAR LIGHT WIRING TROUBLES

I have bought a new rear light and i can't get it wired in so that the lights are off when the switch is, switched on when the switch is on and no brake light at all. i can only get the thing lit up so that both filaments are beaming..... Can any one help? bit of a long shot i know. My new light has red, black and blue wires and the loom on the bike is offering black (joined with the indicator cable), brown and yellow/green earth colourings. Bit of a puzzle to me at the mo. I've got the old light and that's doing the same too. Can't get brake although i can get only 1 filament going on that and both when i swap the wires around but this new light is peeing me off. The old bulb is 12v and the new is 6v. Will this make a difference? Help!!!! RD.

Firstly you will need to bin the 6v lamp and fit the 12v one.
What it sounds like to me is that you have got the earth wire muddled up , this would cause both the filaments to glow at once (backfeed). Without looking at it I would say the black on the bike is the earth (common to the indicator earth) , the brown is the tail light and the green yellow is the brake light . I would connect the black to the black , then connect the other two anyway round then try the back light and brake . The brightest filament should light up on the brake , if it does not then swap the two around . On my CRM you cannot turn off the lights , only switch between high and low beam .
Hope this helps

Cheers for the pointers pmac. I did wonder about the lamp so i'll do that. The 6v one does light up but i was having more luck with the 12v old set up but still couldn't get the brake filament to light. Will have another go tomorrow!!

Okay, got it all working as it should but when i connect the front brake switch back up it sends it wrong again. It illuminates both filaments and then when you operate the switch itself it lights in reverse IE it extinguishes it again?? Sound like a faulty switch???????????

i had a similar thing on ar 'check micro switch isn't sticking in on position IE' in.
Check alignment of " tab " on lever to micro switch 'damage and wear can misaligned these.
Check wiring at switch connections IE bare faulty wires shorting circuit out .Does back brake circuit work without same faults?
Sorry if you've already checked all above.

easiest way to check it with a multimeter mate, particuarly if you use the earth check function... that will tell you if theres any faults in the circuit. i used mine to do the very same job this morning when fitting an led rear light.
