Those Pesky Bearings

:D Whilst awaiting the return of some bits to heal the sick A/R, i thought i would give the swinging arm and linkage bearings a re greasing.
This is a tedious job but does pay dividends if done on a regular basis , it took about an hour and a half from start to finish to take down all the component parts ' degrease' clean and re grease and refit , so don't let them get away ' twice a year should be more than enough to stay on top of them , and as any one who has had to "drift" out a seized swing arm shaft will testify it's an absolute mare of a job if left to long .
The A/R with it's rewound alternator fitted is now starting much easier , and several dodgy connections i found have been sorted .

Or you could drill small holes in the swing arm where the bearings sit; block one hole at the end of the spindle and weld a grease nipple on the other end. Then you can grease them regularly without disassembly :) .

In theory that's a great idea , KTMs used to have grease nipples all over the swinging arm bearings , but in practise you find on disassembly that the grease has gone to the path of least resistance and barely greased any of the rollers , just pushed all the seals out of place .

Smugger than dog with two tails in room full of Dachshunds , until i discovered i could probably have got away without a rewind of the alternator if i had disconnected the kill switch and not assumed it was ok because it looked clean and tidy .
To be fair though , several of the connections were some what dubious and my mastery of a meter is pants at best .
West country windings did say although it was working on there inspection it was showing signs of localised excess heat spots .
LT said they have never , repeat never had one go down . :!: :!:
I do like to first , but not always to the plonker award .
