Can anyone point me in the right direction here. I have not attempted this before, and thought there must be an easy guide somewhere ????

Buy a quality chain spliter,dont try and bodge it with a grinder and punch etc.

I have a chain splitter/ riveter kit, just , Xmas PREZZIE . However prior to this i have only been an exponent of the grinder and punch method, which if done with care ,and a certain amount decorum can be successful , with the aid of a decent vice,
Just remember , you must , finish on an inner plate when cutting , so pay particular attention when measuring the chain, best to set up the chain over the relevant sprockets ,with the appropriate amount of free play in the chain run.
I have split dozens of chains thus far without incident,
Before attempting this check the free play at extreme back end of the back sprocket, if you can pull 10mm or more of slack, the chain is virtually worn out, so a new set is required, which would leave you with a full length chain to put back on the bike in the event that you may one day wish to sell the bike.

Just bought a splitter !!!!.
