Temp gauge

Has anyone tried to fit a temp gauge to a crm. I have had a look at the head and was thinking maybe a sender unit in place of the temp warning sender. Does anyone know what thread size this is?. Was considering a small digital display somewhere , would you have to use a voltage stabiliser as there is no battery or will the regulator be good enough.

Changing the subject a little I have always run my 2 Stroke gearboxes on ATF since being an apprentice 25 yrs ago when i was told by an oil co rep about the properties it needed to have being used as powersteering fluid,automatic gearboxes and manual gearboxes likely to be under heavy load eg land rover Discovery Range Rover Defender R380 LT77 boxes ect. Also with being developed with long drain intervals it is very kind to oil seals and keeps its viscocity when hot and working hard.Plus its also cheaper too .Ihave allways changed it regular probably every 1000 miles on my road bikes, and every 8 or so meets on the trials bike no problems.

I have a temp guage but it was fitted with a TrailTech Vapor speedo/computer. A few others have done this conversion.

Thanks for the reply i have an acewell speedo fitted,just like to know what temp the motor runs at,looks like iwill have to try and work something out. I already have a computer fan on the ns radiator so I am fairly sure it wont boil. thanks again.

mine runs between 74 and 84 degrees if i remember rightly. Knakered, about the same?

The temperature guage that I was sent only fits the hose that runs from the radiator to the water pump so I can only read the temp of the returning water.

Generally runs at 50-60 centigrade has got to 72.

i screwed mine into the top of the cylinder head so you get the engine temp all the time.

Thanks M8 cracking pic, thats the way as it gives cyl head temp, The big difference to my MK 2 is that my spark plug is that side as the powervalve side ,the sender for the overheat light is on the header tank side did different models have different plug locations I wonder, On the plus side I can change the plug without removing anything at all i suppose ,or is mine an oddball . Any ideas.

Jonorrow :BB - neat idea.

I had blanked off and powdercoated my sensor point before I realised that the sensor housing didn't fit the hoses from the cylinder head :roll: .

Hi Mark,
To get a bit technical, firstly, the CRM's system is fine to feed 12v to a gauge, although be aware it rises to about 14.2. Ideally, you'll need a gauge and matched sender to ensure accurate readings. Now you have some ballpark figures for the temp that CRM's run at, have a nose about for a suitable system. Might be worth looking in the marine/boat industry as we use a wide range of temperature gauges and senders on marine engines. You can pick up basic analogue type systems fairly cheaply. Ebay is a good place to nose, just ensure its temp range covers the figures given. Sorting the sender thread maybe the trickiest bit, but I wouldnt think it'd be impossible.

Thanks KK ive got a nice little gauge and sender off a VFR 400 sender looks like same size,will try that soon .Although I still cant get over this bike is17 yrs old .Being lucky there are about 2 miles of trails behind the house(legal too) so its out most days.
