Hi,i hope someone can help.My crm has developed a strange smell from the tailpipe,it smells abit like antifreeze, but i have changed the head gasket and have never lost any coolant. The bike was not used for 2 years, but i changed all the fluids and it seemed fine.It started to smell after a long day out on the lanes.Any ideas

Well, if there is no obvious loss of coolant, and it's not boiling over, i would hazard a guess, that what you are smelling is the burning of oily residue, that has settled out in the exhaust pipe,

do others agree

Thanks for the quick reply, the smell is really strong,my mate noticed it in another street, from my house.I did give it a good thrash before it started to smell, have noticed the smell is also around top of barrel.

Can't reconcile your stated problem with a lack of coolant loss

may be only be a slight weep, but still should show up in the top up eventually.
You did mean, your mate can smell it, from his house, in another street, not just he happens to live in a house a street away

yes i did mean he could smell it from his house which is in a street near my house.God this is getting confusing,What if i drained the coolant out and flushed the system, then filled it up with just water and took it for a ride.If it still smells i know its the exhaust.

It would take a lot of coolant in the exhaust to make it smell that strong. So if there is no significant reduction in the coolant in the radiator it is highly unlikely.
Have you changed 2 stroke oil

Can 2 stroke oil 'go off'

. I wouldn't think so.
Was it topped up with the same oil

Most likely the smell is from the new oil you've added ( was it the same oil ? ) - regarding the question can the oil "go off" - yes, it can in a manner of speaking
The oil you buy is a very carefully balanced blend of base oils and additives - over time, and depending how it's stored, some of these additives can drop out of suspension so the oil won't perform as well as new oil. A rough guide is 2-3 years from fill date normally printed on the pack. I would always recommend only buying oil as you need it - that way you are always using fresh oil. The oil should be clear and bright with no sediment or streakiness.
Considering the cost of a litre of new oil compared to the cost of a rebore - if in doubt, bin the old and get some new - if it's been in the bike a while, might be a good idea to drain and refill with fresh oil - easy enough and when you consider the job it's doing ....

We drained the the 2t out of the MK2 we recently bought, it had been running on pre-mix, the initial oil that drained out was very thin and clear, this however changed to a viscous, and opaque colour after a short while, so yes, old oil will sepperate out.
