Steering Head Bearings
Hello
I'm in the process of changing the steering head bearings on my MK2 as they felt a bit loose on the last ride and after tightening the serated nut still felt a bit loose.
I have got the top and bottom yokes off the bike and removed all but the bottom inner race (they were taper bearings and the outer race and runners came off), but I can't get the inner race off the bottom, I've tried all sorts and unless anyone on here has any other suggestions I plan to take the yoke and spindle to work on Monday and ask someone to put the spindle in a lathe chuck and hopefully unscrew the yoke from the spindle giving a bit more area to wok on loosening the race.
Anyone have any better ideas
Rich

Re: Steering Head Bearings
The bottom race is a sod to get off. Cold chisel and large hammer or Dremel are the two alternatives I have used. You can angle grind through some way but have to use a chisel to it finish off.

Re: Steering Head Bearings
Iv always used a angle grinder to get them off
just be careful with it becasue you can take chunks out the yoke!

Re: Steering Head Bearings
Thanks for the advise gents, managed to get it off, but did catch the stem with the grinder, nothing major though.
Now having a nightmare getting the new one on, its very very tight, already wrecked one....not happy...will have to get another when the shops open on Monday
Any advise greatly appreciated.

Re: Steering Head Bearings
its good practice to chill on part, and heat the other when fitting bearings.
i use freeze spray (available from plumers merthants) or a fridge freezer to chill one part, and a hot air gun to heat the other.
Works a treat, and does far less damage
good luck
