Dead mk2... Electrical?

Hi guys

Spent a while reading through this section and the FAQ. I have a hint as to what the problemS with my bike could be, but let's see what you guys think.

Got a CRM 250 mk 2 from a dealer a while back. It came from the other side of the country so I wasn't able to see it in person, but I was assured that it was in good condition and running.

To cut a long story short, I was conned and the bike is a lemon. The only time I've ridden it is once up and down the street.

However, I still think it has potential.

Here are the issues:
- oil injection not working.
- powervalvenot working (mechanic says servo is dead)
-wiring appears butchered (random wires seem to be cut and joined together)

Right now, it's utterly dead. The mechanic had it for a while, checked it out, had the coil rewound. It worked then - once. After that, dead again.

took it back to the mechanic. He changed the kill switch, it started once and ran ok.

Now, a day later, utterly dead again. No amount of kicking or bumping will get it to ignite. When I kick it, the lights will come on briefly. The neutral light has never worked though.

Any ideas?

Sidestand switch and kill switch would be the first places I looked. By pass both of them and try again.

Thanks Eddie. I think it must be the sidestand switch as the killswitch was just replaced.

Where is the sidestand switch located?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram for a mk2?

The mech changed the kill switch and it worked - now it does not work 0 that is the first place I would look.

Sidestand switch is located on the sidestand bracket with the wiring running up to a connection under the seat.
Many bikes have discarded the switch and linked it out at this connection.

Yeah must be the kill switch. The sidestand switch on my bike seems to have been removed.

I'm intending to use this bike as offroad only. How difficult a task would it be to have it rewired completely, bypassing all the road stuff and lighting?

should not be to difficult with a wiring diagram to see what needs to be kept
Im thinking about a bike with more valves than a powervalve

Welcome too the site.Sorry to hear you've been shafted on you're purchase, no redress under S.A. law?
It's probably best to by a circuit tester, then you will get to know your bike more intimately, as it sounds as though a lot more repairs may be required, and it's unlikely that one fix will right all you're woe's.
Of course you could always go round his shop play one of those BL@@DY, Voovoozalas, until he submits :roll:

It was a bit of a screw up - it was obvious something was wrong with the bike the day it arrived, but I was overseas when it arrived. My friend took delivery of it and sent it to his mechanic thinking it just needed a tune up. The mechanic didn't get back to my friend until 3 weeks later. Only after this did we realise the full extent of the problems, by which stage, we had no legal footing to stand on, as you need to address such things within seven days of recieving the goods. :( Believe me, I'm kicking myself.

OK, back to the issue at hand...

Maybe it's not electrical? I checked, the kill switch is actually ok, I'm gettign spark.

The spark plug looks totally fouled. This happened before, I'm seeing a pattern here -

1) First time bike ws taken to mechanic (abd spent 3 weeks waiting for coil to be rewound) - My friend got the bike, started it first kick, rode it to my place.

2) Next day my brother tried to start it. Dead as a zombie with a bullet through its head.

3) Bike stands for a week until I'm back in town. I notice that spark plug is completely fouled. Replace plug, but no luck. Still dead.

4) Bike returned to mechanic. He says it's a faulty kill switch. Puts on a new kill switch.
Bike starts no problem when it's delivered to my place. I ride it up and down the road, goes fine, idles nicely, revs cleanly. Seems excessively smoky on warmup.

5) Next day, try to start it - absolutely utterly dead. Spark plug seems fouled again, covered in black oil. But there is spark going through the cap.


Ideas, anyone? Could it be that it's just running way too rich and is fouling a plug every time it runs??

try a new spark plug and see if it fires up make sure its the correct spark plug for the bike, if this works then take carb out and air filter and clean both thoroughly, try starting again also check float level, i had some teething problems with miy mk2 with starting issues and fouling plugs, i did these few little jobs and it cured it, it had the wrong plug in as well which even though i got a spark it wasnt burning all the fuel going through so causing plug foul and slight flooding so ran like a bag of spanners when it started let me know how you get on and ill give you some more tips as i stripped my mk2 and went through it all with a fine tooth comb to get it running beautifully also i have posted some links to vids of my wiring on this site so they might help you, as for using off road you dont really need to discard the wiring you can just unplug certain things and bag them up in case you ever want to put it on road again like i did
front brakes only slow you down anyway!!!!

Ok, update. Got my bike running now. I changed the spark plug, drained the tank (the mechanic had put in 20:1 mix),put in premix to 40:1, adjusted the air/fuel screw to 1.5 turns. the bike is starting easily now and everything electrical is working on it save the side stand switch and neutral light.

BUT -

It is not running well. After warming up, it will rev cleanly in neutral, but refuses to pull high revs when riding. It takes off on low revs ok, then *struuuggllleess* to rev or pull harder.

Jetting perhaps?

When you had it running before was it working ok. If it was then unless you have taken it off it is unlikely to be the following which is is to make sure that the power valve cables and bracket are connected correctly.
Other things are to strip and clean the carb. Check the jets against standard shown in FAQ.

You say the electrics are all working. Does the powervalve turn :?: . If not, take the arm off the PV do the cables move now (when the engine is reved) :?: .

i think what mike was saying is, is he still using the pump or disabled it and bunged the holes up so its not sucking air through
