Hi all,

Has anyone ever fit the moto-x type 'push' kill button that a lot of enduros/moto-x bikes tend to have either instead of or alongside the ordinary rocker kill switch?

I am wondering about fitting one maybe to the left side of bars, do they just cut the ignition direct to earth (short it out). I don't want to damage anything electrical by shorting the circuit, any electrical gurus out there?

All I would do is wire it in to the kill switch what is fitted as that system is already working.

I think the standard one is on off, ie breaks the ignition circuit, but the moto-x type actually short the circuit.

Anyone know if this will harm anything? ie ECU?

Are you sure dude? Wouldnt that cause the wires to melt? Or is there some kind of protection for that?

Depends upon the type of Ignition system the bike has.

You say "Dirt Bike",,,,those typically have a self-generating power source.
AKA,,a Magneto,,,either CDI or Breaker Points.

The KILL SWITCH on those simply GROUNDS the primary voltage .
So it cannot spark.
It literally Shorts-Out the ignition system.

On bikes which depend upon Battery Power to supply power to igntion system,,,,
The Kill Switch OPENS the wiring connection to the ignition ,,,so that it gets no power.


Bikes which have a Key Switch AND a kill switch,,,work the same way.
But simply have DUAL SWITCHES.
One requires a Key,,the Other is simply a "push button".

On a Battery Ignition,,,The Key Turns ON the electricity then the Kill Switch turns it Off.

On a typical "Dirt Bike Magneto",,
The Key UNGrounds the Ignition power,,,so it can spark.
then the Kill Switch Grounds out the power to Kill the Spark at the Spark Plug



So, i guess your right Active, it shorts out the circuit

No, I just have a moto-x kill switch I was given and wondered if I could fit it onto the LH side of bars in addition to the rocker switch, would make it easier if I dropped the bike on the right side and left bar was nearest to hand.

thats just sheer lazyness it wont take much more energy to flip the kill switch rather than push it

I meant easier to get to, say if the bike landed funny, or if the RH sitch was deep in mud.

any bike falling over isnt funny
right my cr250 has a push button kill switch which has 2 wires a green one and a black and whits one, if you wanted to you could wire it into the flip switch without having to ground the green wire and it would act as a bypass but you would have to wire it to the wires going into the flip switch, this should work, i know it wouldnt cause any issues with shorting as all youre doing is breaking the circuit so you are safe to try it

Cheers, the 'push' switch makes a circuit through. The connection inside makes a connection as you push it, which shorts the ignition to the earth therefore jumping the actual ignition system.

I may pm our friend 2tracelab briefly, but not too fussed, could always leave it off!!

The problem with the MX style kill switches is that you have to hold them on. When you fall off and the motor is still running you find that you want to kill the motor and then get on with whatever needs doing quickly rather than wait for the engine to stop turning before you do anything.

Is it not just as quick to turn the ignition key? Spose its harder to find in a panic.

What are them things you fit to a flexible lead that pull out if you come off?
