Problem ??

My CRM MK2 had a bit of a hiccup today...not sure if it was just that, or if there's something brewing?

All went all day until a long climb in 2nd and then a 1st/2nd gear trail that lasted 3 or 4 miles.

Towards the middle of the long trail when in 1st gear I couldn't change to 2nd, it was locked solid, I could select neutral and only 1st, after another mile or so, I managed to get 2nd, but again could only get neutral.

At the end of trail, we stopped and had a rest, after I set off and for the first 100 yds I couldn't change out of 2nd, and then vouala....all was fine and dandy with no more problems the rest of thre ride.

I did wonder if the oil had got too hot and therefore too thin, or is there a problem brewing that needs looking at?

Any thoughts?

:o How old is the oil in the box?
What oil is it?
Have you physically checked the level?
How often do you change the oil?

Worn dogs or channels and/or bits of broken teeth catching in a vital area.

Suggest you change oil and look for bits of metal. If problem continues then you need to look at the gear change mechanism.

Gearbox oild is 3 (big) rides old. Level is/was OK before change, Oil is changed every 3 or 4 rides.

Didn't find any signs in the old oil, filtered it through a cloth in to a jug, nothing in the cloth when it had finished running through.

Using Putoline Light Gear Synthetic - SAE75

Have you tried a magnetic sump plug - Very good at removing bits of steel.

You checked for the obvious, detritus accumulated around the shifter not allowing a full throw of the lever.
This can happen, by a stone or similar, then it drops out and alls well again.
I couldn't find any fault in you're choice of oil, or frequency of changing.
Which may mean if it's not the above that, possibly the selectors are showing their age, luckily, that's not a full engine split to rectify.
