Plug black?

Checking the CRM today, plug is a 9 iridium type, and was black as!! it smokes quite heavily especially after a lane then opening the throttle on the road! so I checked the oil pump that was fine, marks lined up on full throttle, took the slide out and put the clip on the second from the top, was on the third so that should weaken the mixture a bit? yes/no?
The air box had holes drilled in the side cover when I got it! I have filled them in and sealed the holes.
could that be too much? the needle clip? and cause a failure? if it might I will swop it back!

the lower down the needle you move the clip the richer the mixture becomes.

So have I weakened the mixture? how much does it weaken it by for one clip position?

Yes, the mixture has been weakened by raising the clip.Filling in the additional air holes has in effect richened the mixture again. Lifting the clip one notch would be noticeable, was it reluctant to rev out before?
My advice, put a new plain B8ES plug in and monitor the plugs condition.
Is the filter clean and oiled?
Has it started to use gearbox oil?
What model is the bike, and what jets is it running on?

Hi Mike, bikes a mk3 yes it does not like reving out! I checked the PV and that seemed fine, got a BS8ES I can put in so I will try that! cleaned the filter today was not especially dirty! not using gearbox oil so not a crank seal! not sure what jets are in it I will take a look!

std jets should be 150 main and 45 pilot
needle 3 (middle) and air screw 1 1/4 turns out

Without dragging out the manual, isn't it a 48 pilot for the mk3?
DEP pipe,?
Mine doesn't like the standard setting with the DEP pipe, needing to be run leaner than the manual says.
If I was racing I would nervous, but seeing as only Trail riding these days, it's fine.

it doesnt matter how much premix you run, you should still be able to get a 'clean pug'
for instance I am going to run 30:1 in my CRM when shes finished, whereas I beleive std is 50:1...
clean your plug (with a brush and some petrol) or replace it if fowled, then fix your jetting.
it sounds like if its just smoking when you come out of a lane and onto open road, that would be your main jet mostly and maybe the needle?.
Id start by going 1 or 2 smaller on the main jet and then do a full throttle plug chop
"blast down the road with at 100% throttle, kill the motor, pull the clutch in, come to a stop, check the plug"

That's the trouble with having a couple of different Mks and the memory span of a guppy.

I am out Sunday with the needle clip up 1 so I will see how it goes, prob won`t get to check the jets till after, but if someone put holes in the air filter housing then they may have put a bigger jet in it!!

Sounds logical, what I used to do on any high speed extended road work was to flick the choke on for a couple of seconds, probably overkill, but.

Bike definatly seems to pull in the higher revs better now with the needle dropped one notch! but the tick over seems to stay high when at idle? does this point to a weak mixture! I think I can smell the bike hotter on the lanes than it used to? if that makes sense!
I will pull the carb over ASAP and check the jets! and try and do a plug chop! god that brings back memories of the RD`s and KH days!!

Just to confirm - You are using premix or not

.
Really need to know what jets you have.
