how to check compression?

The bikes been fine for a couple of months but the b+*#+*#d won't start.ive checked there's a spark and fuels going into the carb and alls ok there.ive left the plug out overnight to make sure I haven't flooded and it still won't start. when I go to kickstart it there's still resistance but maybe not as much as before.its hard to say I wasn't paying much attention to how much resistance there was before. can anyone tell me how to check if there's a problem with compression? I haven't tried jumping it yet, would it be worth a try?
the chokes been a bit dodgy recently, working intermittently.but if it wasnt working it would still want to start but just wouldn't idle right? if the plot jet was bunged up would that stop it from starting?
any ideas would be great full!

compression test is simple if youve got a compression tester , spark plug out compression tester into plug hole ,kick bike over and see what the reading is , sorry but i dont no what it should be but im sure someone will be along with the figures later ,
as for the carb give it good cleanout then you no its not the problem

Dirty pilot jet is a major impediment to starting, clean that first.
Get a NEW B8RS plug, pop, it in the cap and check for the spark, in a dimly lit area is best.
If you have a spark, pop it back in.
Now follow,
Fuel - on
Choke- on
Ignition -off
OPEN THROTTLE JUST A SMIDGEN.
Engage 1st gear- proceed to rock the bike backward and forwards for about ONE minute, this sucks the fuel through.
Ignition -ON
Have a box/crate to stand your left foot on to allow a full kick through of the lever.
Kick smartly through.
Does it now live?
I compression tested my MK3 yesterday and got a reading of 150 psi, on a warm engine, with the throttle open.
My bike starts without any trouble.
