CRM AR 250 Engine Rebuild Costs

Post by helisupp » 08 Sep 2012, 18:43

Well I have to admit these engines are not cheap to overhaul.

The price just charged by the well known CRM specialists was £650 plus the price of a replacement crank which I know is over £500.

So, if you do not have a crank its another £500 or the cost of the Maico conrod and piston, plus barrel has to be rebored oversize and replated to take the Maico piston which would probably cost a £400.

So glad I picked up that engine a few months ago, crank was like new, now installed in the overhauled engine.

Honda do not supply conrod kits for the CRM

So LT use a Maico conrod and piston, you can find it on the forum.

I've looked very hard to find what Maico conrod they might use and haven't found anything yet of the same dimensions as a CRM (I've tried a lot of other bike manufactures as well). As far as I know the original source of the LT conrod being Maico was 'Johnny's tool box' (or something similar). However I have found that there are some untruths in the story told on his website and he has never returned any emails I have sent. Thus I am not sure of the 'Maico' provenance :? .

Has anyone had LT say to them that the conrod is Maico :?: .

Also I have never heard LT talk about Maico pistons :? . Before it has always been TRX pistons. Is this something new in that the conrod and piston give the same stroke and piston height dimensions as a CRM :?:

Is it worth having a batch of say 30 conrods made, it must be cheaper than having the barrel replated.

Who makes conrods in small batches, can the big end bearings be purchased easily (what size are they).

WHO WOULD KNOW

I don't think you can buy a big end bearing, no!! I know the LT con-rod is Italian, and possibly off a Maico, but cannot confirm this, neither will they. This is because they tell me it's taken ages to research a con-rod that will work, and they don't want to just share the info.

The piston used is for a TRX250. The problem with the above mentioned con-rod is that the small end is (I think) 1mm different in diameter to the CRM bearing, and the only piston suitable to fit is off a TRX250. They can no longer get the 66.4mm pistons apparently and I think the one I had was 66.5mm, therefore the need for machining and re-plating. This LT have done at Lancourts down in weston Supermare.

As I remember PROX and Hot Rods make main bearings of 25.0x32.0x16.5mm (to fit CR250s).

I thought LT used SEP at Kegworth (just down the road from them) :?: .

The piston kit was a prox.

LT use SEP for splitting and rebuilding the crank. I took mine myself there to have done as it worked out cheaper.

Active Rascal is correct, I may have misinterpreted "Maico" from a different discussion !!!

Although the LT overhauled engine is purely for spares stock, I have a spare surplus corroded crankshaft with a good undamaged cylinder. So will take the cylinder tomorrow to get them both refurbished to take the new conrod and piston, then I will have an exchange crank and cylinder set available, no waiting time if ever one is needed in the future.

FYI Wossner still have 66.4mm pistons for the CRM250.

You still interested in the piston kit Mark? I forgot to list it on Ebay when it was free this weekend just gone.

I have just picked up the engine from LT, nothing wrong with the piston (already bought a spare just in case) so no need for it. They were surprised it was your engine. They said the crank that was removed would be ok for a while, but they played safe and replaced it.

The Conrod question was posed today, and it is not a Maico item........story is ongoing as I was unable to find out the source even using a headlock and carrying out a chinese burn on the individual.

I am sure it is not custom made or they would have had it made the same size as the original item.

Spare engine now going into storage.

No worries. Perhaps they were surprised as they didn't realise it was my old engine? Did they remember me then? It was stumpy that did my engine, he works from home.

Can you send some pics of my old bike when she's finished during and after rebuild, I'd appreciate that.

Shaun.
