i fitted 1990 CR 250 forks to my CRM 250 AR today

i fitted 1990 CR 250 forks to my CRM 250 AR today - in my opinion they are significantly better than the standard crm fork.

I needed to use the front spindle, spacers etc from the 1990 fork also, but managed to retain the standard mecanical speedo drive.

In my opinion, the crm fork was very very softly damped, and softly sprung.

Both CRM 250 AR, and 1990 CR 250 used 45 mm showa USD forks.

The CR 250 has slightly more travel at 300mm, as apposed to crm 20 AR fork which has 285 mm.

To say im happy is an understatement - i should have done this years ago!

I had previously used heavier fork oil in the crm fork to try to make them stiffer, but to be honest it made then really "harsh" over small bumps, and still too soft on "big hits" and jumps.

The CR 250 fork feels much firmer, but not harsh at all - its actually surprisingly "plush" for an old Motocross fork!

Excellent I am thinking of this mod myself, AR forks are the same size as a Mk3? are they? what year did the CR forks go bigger than 45mm?

Well thats me at a loss.
I'm sure the forks that I fitted were from a '91/'92 CR250, but they are 43mm.
I had to bit spacers in my 45mm Mk2 yokes.

Look guys you are talking about the diameter (thickness) of the chrome stations with your 43/45mms, not the parts that fit into the yokes. These vary with year of manufacture, which is a much better way of discussing what forks fit. I'm afraid it is down to you to sort out what will fit and perhaps producing a table of fitment and adjustments necessary. A further thing to add to your 'fork fitment' discussion is what about brakes, axels, front wheels etc.............. I would imagine that for some situations it is best to swap the whole from end including the wheel; perhaps putting the original CRM steering post into a new front end .

You can fit CRF 250 forks (2005 onwards) in but you need to get the whole front end, then put the CRM post into the CRF yokes and you need a bush for each yoke - made by someone who knows what the are doing with limits and fits. The brake fits as long as you have the CRF hanger. In standard trim you may find the CRF forks very stiff if only trail riding but if you are doing H&H etc you will find over the very rough stuff and jumps etc, they are amazing. Budget £300 + machining costs

Ah KnackeredMk1, that makes sense now, wondered why the size went up and down so much on the specs, its the stanchions not the sliders that these sizes point to!!
