struggling with the dogs- gearbox jig saw..

been fiddling for an hour or so now.,,

either I got the drive shaft reassembled wrong.. ( but I threaded each bit onto a ziptie as I took em off - hmmm but still possible I screwed somethin up? phone rang during reassembly for example)

my goldfish memory isnt helpin and the pictures are a bit dark on these points :oops:

which dog is best to put in first?

i'm trying to get input shaft roughly in position - so gears mesh and spin smoothly.. when I fiddle with the bottom dog on the drive shaft..

I can get them to spin smoothly together - but cant get the last dog in position at all! ( top dog on the drive shaft _

at least not with all the dogs in position - ie their leg in the gear selector drum..

thanks mike! - the boddington is long gone,

i am however having that 'ikea moment'

if the ring that is standing to attention- is on the drive shaft where my photos suggest it goes, there's no way on earth the case will close..

looks like the cogs closest to the bearings are snug, and drive shaft i assembled looks to mesh ok with the input shaft which I havent buggered with...

tried lookin in the manual but the resolution of the pics is a bit low.

in the LT manual I dont see that bit,...

hmm maybe it really did come from ikea?


and I just noticed one of me dogs is a bit worn ( the C dog ) the single sided one - that lifts the input shaft malarky. :( ( meh! missed that! lucky this is just trying it out - i think the frame is about a week away so its not a huge deal,

anyone got one ? might have to ask leisure trail again!! :shock:

The way I do the dogs is first to get the shafts in. Then place the dogs on the shafts and finally fit the dog shafts. Goes in no bother every time..........

With respect to the C dog. I wouldn't worry unless changing gear before the rebuild was difficult.

thats a relief!

changin gear was fine, finding neutral was a different story,. ( i got my clutch basket milled - so hope thats sorted )

so brill! :mrgreen: next step is getting the crank out the freezer.. remembering to put the bearing retainers back on first..

how about the "ikea ring" ?

can see it "in position" - womdering if I set this photo up??!

gearbox appears to work, spin selector drum an can select a few gears for sure.. but cant close case with this ring..

wondering if if dropped out when I split the cases and I guessed its position,,

cant see it in the LT exploded diagram ( which has saved my bacon! )

No. I think it comes from on the crank as a spacer.

I may be wrong, but isn't that the collar for the crank shaft which will have the o-ring on the ID and the crank seal running on the OD?

Reading this I think I may have just assembled my engine wrong :( I had that piece too with the o ring inside. It was in the bag with my gearbox assembly but couldn't find where it went. After a while and a look at the manual I decided it went on the outside of the gear box and was bagged incorrectly. On the shaft that the clutch basket goes on. Behind the clutch basket o ring facing in. Seems to fit but reading this I have just got paranoid I've done it wrong... Where does the bit go? please don't tell me I've got to split the cases again!

Not the clutch sorry i put it behind the 3 gears next to the clutch

I'm not sure what part you are meaning Clint :? . The part that Fishy is talking about doesn't exist on a Mk1. The Mk1 uses a more sophisticated cush drive on the crank where as the Mk2 and on just replace this with a spacer. (Both have O rings that fit inside).

I think you are talking about the compression seal (mk1 only) that goes on the outside of the drive shaft and seals when the sprocket and dished washer are attached:
