I need to weld a nut on the end of my side stand bracket, so the spring won't ping of.
I would be arcing, for that is what I have/do.

Do I need to disconnect my ECU unit to prevent any damage here?

Ta chaps.

I'd disconnect it, remove it and put it under my bed for safe keeping ;)
Can't be too careful, 5 mins of unplugging may save you a couple of hundred quid and a few weeks off the road.
Whilst it may be OK to weld with the whole system connected it's never worth the risk in my book.

Thanks for the advice Andy.
A fine idea too.

+1 BUT also encase it in lead, then bubble wrap.

+ 1 fill the bubble wrap with an inert gas.

+1, then surround the entire area with a rather large fence, with barbed wire along the top. A moat is possible if your bedroom is downstairs

Make sure you disconnect the alternator, voltage regulator, coil.................everything that has an earth.

I welded a sidestand on a friends GT185 bike a many years ago, the wiring loom melted and nearly caught fire when we pressed the starter button afterwards.

Purely a coincidence you understand.

Right about now tapping a thread on there is sounding mighty attractive.

Yeah, you know what?

I might shelve the welding bit. Tapping and glueing seems more attractive.

No contacts with a little gas set?

Not really Mike.

Its not critical anyway. The nut has stayed on wedged against the frame guard, just wanted to make it a bit more permanent.
