temperature and oil level LED wiring colour

Post by nicko » 29 Apr 2014, 22:39

Hello,
¿Does anyone understand which wires do what on the four way connector from the LED relay block to the instrument binnacle? The wires on my Mk3 are red, blue, yellow and white/black.

The reason i ask is 'cos i'm fitting a trail tech motorcycle indicator dash & i have only three wires to connect to for the new indicator LEDs, one being common between the two.

¿Wot voltage goes to the LEDs? I guess i could just stick 3v down the wires until the LEDs illuminate.

i'm hoping someone else has been down this path before me , thanks :-)

I used the plug that comes with the trailtech dash and re-arranged the pins in the loom plug to match. you do have to add an earth joiner across the shared one or the lights dont work at all.
I left the original oil light LED plugged in but removed the temp light as the trailtech dash shows temp (if you got the full kit with temp sender unit).
Worse bit to wire in for me was RPM trigger as the coil is well buried on the AR.

thanks for your help greg :-)
i've just put 3V across all the pairs of pins and have discovered that;

white with blue stripe is -negative side of temperature LED
red is +positive side of temperature LED
blue is -negative side of oil LED
yellow is +positive side of oil LED

i've got the temperature detector on trail tech too but want as much indication of over-heating as possible 'cos last ride it boiled over before i noticed the standard temperature LED was on :-o Fortunately i've had the head off (to check thermostat) so RPM trigger wire wuz easy.

I took the LED lights out of my standard clocks and left them plugged in. much easier.

I fitted a Trailtech clock a few years ago but wired the oil level sensor wrong and not bothered to change it, i just use the visual method. One thinhg i did sus out was the temp sender screws directly into the head, saving cutting any pipe work!
When i get time i will see if i can get the wiring sorted out, but i think im due a ring/piston change sooner.

The answer to
¿Wot voltage goes to the LEDs?
is that it is 12v.

There must be summat inside the standard CRM speedo binnacle that converts the 12v in to whatever voltage is used by the leds. Initially i had the leds supplied with the trail tech connected to these wires but they got blown by the 12v, converting to the filament bulbs also supplied works fine :-)
