mk1 & mk2 frame differences?

Post by Hallsy » 05 Jan 2015, 16:49

Can anyone tell me the obvious differences between the mk1 & mk2 CRM frames?

Any pictures maybe?

I bought my CRM as a mk2 and it was a 1991 bike according to V5.

However, I have recently found that it had a mk1 wiring loom & CDI/PV controller. I have sold the frame with V5 so I don't have the frame number to hand, but I wanted to be sure whether I had a mk1 or mk2 engine.

Have checked the engine number and it is MD24E-100xxxx - which according to the FAQ says that this would follow the frame number system and would make it a 1989-1990 so mk1.

Thing is, it had mk2 graphics, usd forks and I was sure the frame was a mk2 frame - but as I never really had any reference or reason to question it's age - I just assumed it was as mk2!

Just trying to suss out whether I have a mix of mk1 & mk2 bits, or whether someone had fitted a mk1 engine and wiring into a mk2 frame/bike.

No obvious differences. The head tube is slightly longer on the Mk2 and the shock mount is different. I don't have any comparative photos but I could probably tell you from a photo. You probably had a Mk1 bike with some Mk2/CR forks fitted. The Mk1 engine requires a Mk1 loom and electronics as the ignition pickups are mounted in a different position to the other Mks.

Cheers Nack - maybe it was a late registered mk1 or there was a mix up when it got imported.

I had always assumed it was a mk2 as that was what it was sold as, and was registered in 1991.

This is the frame I had -

That's a Mk2 frame.

Thanks Nack.

That is good then, as that is what I bought it as!!

So it seems that at some point someone has put a mk1 engine and electrics in it. Certainly the loom is mk1 anyway as it has the separate cdi & pv units. And as the FAQ suggests, with an engine number of 10xxxxx it would be a mk1 engine.

Are the ignition pickups in a very different position, or is it subtle? These are in the corners above the flywheel.

Hi,
I was going to start a new thread and then saw that this is exactly the question I need answering if possible.
Almost the same situation as Hallsy I bought a CRM250 beliving it to be a Mk2. I was told it was manufactured 1992 and imported in 2002 the front forks are USD.
After running the spanners over it a bit I now know that it has seperate CDI and PV unit, a Mk1 carb fitted, the front wheel bearings are 6202's and not 6003's so Mk1's and the engine number is 100XXXX so again a Mk1 so I have the same question in that is my frame a Mk1 or Mk2?
The problem is that the frame number is V1Bxxxxx so not the standard numbers and yes this is shown on the V5 although it shows the same number for the engine.
@knackeredMK1 or anyone i'd be grateful if you could let me know of any quick checks to identify the frame as a Mk1 or Mk2. If it turns out to be a Mk1 frame then I would like to identify the forks as well.
Its not stripped down so I dont have any pics of just the frame.
Any tips or advice gratefully received.

On my mk1 the forks that came on it are 1991 CR125 forks but I have seen a old photo of my bike with another set on it as well I have no idea what they were. But I know I can fit Cr250 as well as Kx250 forks in to the triple clamps. I believe Kackered said to fit other forks on to a mk1 you had to shave some off the clamps to make them fit or if you want to put a mk2 or mk3 triple clamp on you had to change the length of the neck bolt.
